don't know if this will help you at all, but had the same problem with a Kubuntu installation on my Sony VGN-B99GP. Turned out not to be a problem with Xorg but rather a bios problem.

Fixed it by using the 915resolution package and running that.

There is another one for the 800 series chips too.. do a google and see what you can find.
