[opensuse] virtualisation: xen vs kvm
hi all, afaicr there are several ways om virtualisation techniques available under suse. What is currently advised for doing an virtual suse machine on hardware running 12.2? XEN or KVM? Reason for asking is that it seems that xen-through yast doesn't work anymore. I booted up the xen-kernel and tried to create a machine through yast2-module. -kept paravirtualized -defined mem 1024 def./2048 max. -iso-image, 10GB disk -paravirt network adapter (fixed mac), on a proper working br0. after pressing OK, it just yields: "unable to connect to libvirt with URI (none)" and "No kernel was found. the installation may have failed." tried: - 64-bit in stead of 32-bit iso-image - plain 10GB file instead of logical volume - full instead of para The log in /var/log/xen/domain-builder-ng.log only says that loader-probe fails because the kernel isn't a bzImage. Up till 11.4 i used to create xen-image on the fly this way. Any suggestions? Hans

I use oracle's version of VirtualBox but beware of 12.3m1 using lvm. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I use xen for servers, but for a single machine, I would personally just use VirtualBox.

after pressing OK, it just yields: "unable to connect to libvirt with URI (none)" and "No kernel was found. the installation may have failed."
There is an opensuse-virtual mailing list, they're usually very responsive. Unless you did something wrong, this sounds like a bug, maybe that yast module needs some updating. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (3.4°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Both are expected to work. KVM is known to work. From a quick bugzilla check it looks like xen causes some trouble in combination with grub2.
