question on mounting pendrive
Dear suse users: In suse-9.0 when I connected an USB-pendrive to the computer the system beeped when the drive was ready for mounting. (I use manual mounting instead of automatic.)
From suse-9.1 on this behavior has changed and the system does not give any sign when the pendrive is ready. I liked the beeping in 9.0, how could I get it back in suse 9.3 ? Thanks, IG

I remember that in 9.0 but no beep in 9.1 Can I ask: Does it always mount? In 9.1 mine is an 'if I feel like it' thing. One day it will mount, the next it won't, even if I reboot with/without the drive inserted. Same applies to my usb drives. I'm too scared to mess with my fstab. Regards, Colin

Make a back up of the file. Once you've done that just make one change at a time. :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care. Dear Colin, I think beep does not have to do anything with the mounting itself. It just signs that the drive is recognized and is ready for mounting. Since in 9.1 and on there is no beep you have to 'feel' when the drive is ready, and this is that I don't like. I don't know if mine would mount or not since I have turned off automatic mounting. I prefer manual mounting, then I know when it is mounted and when not. You can change your fstab, it is easy. First make a bakup of the original fstab, should anything go wrong you can set it back easily. You can find a decriptiopn how to change the fstab at: for 9.1 (applies to 9.2 too, I guess): http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/ hmeyer_91_revert_from_subfs.html for 9.3: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/05/ dkukawka_subfs_nomount.html http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/05/ dkukawka_hal_mountpoints.htm After changing the fstab, you can create a device icon on you desktop. If you use KDE, on the desktop right mouse click -> create new -> link to device -> hard disc device. In the general tab you can give a name for the icon, clicking the device icon you can set up another icon (in 9.2, 9.3 there is very nice pendrive icon). In the device tab you set the device as it is in fstab. You can do this procedure for CD/DVD media too. If you're done you can mount/unmount your device by right mouse clinking on the icon and clicking on mount/unmount. Randall Schulz Thanks Randall. I will look at it tomorrow evening, and have a good read, as it is past my bed time now and I need to be up early tomorrow. Regards, Colin

Don't thank me. I just cleaned up the wrapped URLs and restored the missing 'l' at the end of the third one. Istvan supplied the references.

After changing the fstab, you can create a device icon on you desktop. If you use KDE, on the desktop right mouse click -> create new -> link to device -> hard disc device. In the general tab you can give a name for the icon, clicking the device icon you can set up another icon Thanks for this. I tried it. My menu (9.1) is slightly different, but I managed to make the icons for dvd-recorder and cd-recorder. However, when I tried to dismount I was told that only root could dismount the CD, even though I am the owner and permissions are okay. It is because I have not changed the fstab file which looks like: {my comments} /dev/hde2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1 /dev/hdf2 /data1 auto noauto,user 0 0 /dev/hde1 swap swap pri=42 0 0 /dev/hdf1 swap swap pri=42 0 0 {I understand the above four lines} devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 {I don't understand what the above is for} proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 {I believe that this is used by the system - leave it be} usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 {is this all I need?} sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 {what is this for?} /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 { have doubts if this is exactly correct!} /dev/dvdrecorder /media/dvdrecorder subfs fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0 { have doubts if this is exactly correct!} /dev/fd0 /media/floppy subfs fs=floppyfss,procuid,nodev,nosuid,sync 0 0 {I have no hardware floppy, but I read that it is needed by SuSE}
Finally, how can I tell if devices should be mounted as sda etc ? I looked at the hotplug configuration file, as from the URL you suggested, but I don't have the line they mentioned: HOTPLUG_USE_SUBFS change from yes to no Should I insert it? And would the following HOTPLUG_LOAD_MULTIPLE_MODULES=no prevent me from mounting several devices at once?
In the device tab you set the device as it is in fstab. You can do this procedure for CD/DVD media too. If you're done you can mount/unmount your device by right mouse clinking on the icon and clicking on mount/unmount. This I understand. But I think that my fstab lacks a bit.
Thanks for your help Istvan. Regards, Colin
