[opensuse] MythTV Video Capture/TV Card Recommendation
Hi! Anyone is using MythTV? I would really appreciate if you share your info - which video capture/TV cards you are using? Does it supports HD, simultaneus capture from several TV channels. Have you installed remote control for MythTV? Thanks in advance for any info. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I use the SVN version.

I am still using an old Hauppauge PVR-250. However, here is a list of compatible hardware: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Category:Video_capture_cards
Does it supports HD,
No, the PVR-250 does not support HD, but MythTV does if you have a HD card.
simultaneus capture from several TV channels.
In order to do that, you will either need multiple cards or a card with more than one tuner. You will need this setup too if you want PiP
Have you installed remote control for MythTV?
Yes, the one that comes with my card. Charles
ATI cards are just about as useful as "WinModems" On Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 2:27 PM, Andrei Verovski (aka MacGuru) <andreil1@starlett.lv> wrote:

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950Q which has a driver in the pipeline. It's a great tuner which supports HD and QAM. As raf as recording more than one channel at a time you will need a device with more then one tuner or buy more than one device. Haven't used Myth yet but will as soon at my device is supported. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I'll sell you a haup 150 for cheap :).. Going to buy a 950 here On 9/11/08, Ken Schneider <suse-list3@bout-tyme.net> wrote:

I'll second that... at least for a MythTV setup... the best advice I can give is use ANY other video card other than ATI. There are some irritating known bugs in the ATI drivers that cause all sorts of problems with a MythTV setup such as: - segfaults in MythTV when exiting the "WatchTV" module - full system locks when switching desktops - loss of vertical hold in "WatchTV" module when changing channels - MythTV sub-menus do not display or load properly The forums etc are full of people discussing the issues, and have been around since at least the middle of last year. I've encountered all of these probs with my ATI based setup, and none of the problems when I used an nVidia card. There is a workaround for all problems though. If you do have an ATI card export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true will fix the segfaults, lockups and menu display problems. The workaround for the vertical hold problem is to exit the TV module back to the main menu and restart the TV module. I've found no other way to correct this. They make drivers for ATI TV cards under Linux? How would I get my "ATI Theatre 550 Pro" card to work? Last I head there just is no driver. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm using the Myth packages from Packman without any problems. Regarding TV cards, I'm using 3 Kworld DVB-T 220 cards which are no longer available. For a full list of what TV cards are supported by the kernel see http://bttv-gallery.de/ Be warned that some manufactures change the chipset but keep the same model number. On Digital broadcasts it is possible to record a number of concurrent shows if they are on the one transport stream. But in general you need one tuner per channel you wish to record. See http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Record_multiple_channels_from_one_multi... You will definitely need a remote control if you plan to use Myth on your TV. Some info can be found here http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Using_an_IR_Blaster_with_MythTV http://www.lirc.org/ http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=Remotes I suggest it may be useful to join the myth users mailing list. http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users -- Regards, Graham Smith -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
