[opensuse] New Wireless driver, where? [WAS: First attempt at installing wireless]
Still more searching - everything is not as it seems. Per lspci -nn I have a Broadcom BCM4312 [14e4:4315] The 4315 variant is not supported by the b43 module. But a very new kernel module (wl.ko) does support it as well as most of what the b43 module supports. It is available directly from Broadcom: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php But it comes in a hybrid form. I can't find it prepacked (compiled) for OpenSUSE 11.1. I have not even found a HowTo yet. Does this exist? If not, I'll download the "hybrid" and use the generic readme. This is unbelievably painful. I found instructions at: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless)/Broadcom_BCM43xx#Broa... I have followed them but it still did not work: 1) I installed broadcom-wl from packman (brand new release is available) 2) I rebooted to the normal kernel -- no joy 3) I had noticed that during the broadcom-wl install it had installed a debug kernel and that was added to my grub menu. I booted it up. I updated the opensuse wiki to reflect the above. And I added a couple of references to the bc4312. http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless)/Broadcom_BCM43xx This is my first experience with linux and wireless, so if one of you experts feel I messed up the wiki entry, please fix it. I also updated the HCL for broadcom. Same comment applies. http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Network_Adapters_(Wireless)#Chipsets Thanks Greg -- Greg Freemyer Litigation Triage Solutions Specialist http://www.linkedin.com/in/gregfreemyer First 99 Days Litigation White Paper - http://www.norcrossgroup.com/forms/whitepapers/99%20Days%20whitepaper.pdf The Norcross Group The Intersection of Evidence & Technology http://www.norcrossgroup.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Changed it. Packman has had broadcom kmp packages available for all the kernel flavors, not just the debug kernel, since they started packaging it. Additionally, the broadcom-wl package simply provides the module blacklist necessary for wl.ko to work. It does not require the debug kernel, but it does have broadcom-wl-kmp as a dependency, which can be fulfilled by any of the broadcom-wl-kmp-* packages. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Okay, from my normal desktop pc (no wireless) via yast I just clicked broadcom-wl from the broadcom choices. It auto checked only the debug kernel. When I installed on the laptop, I did not notice that it auto selected only the debug kernel, thus my confusion. I'm going to edit the wiki entry to note that issue.
