If your modem is configured to report real outside speed, and not serial link speed, wvdial will print that in the "connect" string: --> Waiting for carrier. ATDT90839... CONNECT 50666/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. Then, if what you need is the real measured speed on usage, then run one of those applets or gadgets displaying connection speed. I use gkrellm.
