Re: [SLE] Suse8.0 on laptop with XP preinstalled on it..

Hi, I have just recieved my new laptop. It's a Dell Inspiron 8200! Sexy and fast ofcourse BUT preinstalled with Windows XP.. Now.. I'm practically dying to put in a SuSE 8.0 boot disk in it, but I want some advice from the list first =) I'm quite sure I will void some kind of guarantee when I throw out XP and install linux instead.. Maybe I could dualboot? I have no clue! I don't know XP very well and I really just want to get rid of it, hehe.
Does anyone have any tips for me before I decide to install linuxh on it? Maybe someone else also bought a laptop (or any computer) with XP preinstalled.. what did you do?
By the way.. the cd of XP i have is "meant for dell computers only" so I understand that I won't be able to install it on my gaming computer instead, unfortunately =/ That one will have to remain dualboot win98se/linux..
I believe that I would ask Wlm. Gates for my money back and return the useless (in more that one way) plastic with windohs XP on it. Don't know if that offer by M$ was ever acknowledged, but I would try. You didn't have a choice when you purchased the laptop, did you? Of course, if you wanted to keep the disk, ask (TELL) M$ to give you a copy that is not Compaq specific. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org
You missed the point!
This M$ Windows XP copy comes with/from a M$-Compq deal. The M$ software
is sold to Compaq at a special price. Same package sold to another
laptop manufacturer is charged at another price. The disk content MIGHT
(and this is not obvious) be the same, its commercial value is not ...
And bottom line, M$ software is not GNU licensed / Open Source /
Freeware ... but this is compeltely OT, I'm afraid ...
(PS: I have installed SuSE 8.0 PRofessional on my SONY Vaio on dual boot
with M$ Windows XP Professional. Only hitch: no sound, and a rather
useless advice for this list on how to fix this ... The question is
still opened ...)

i'm using a Sony Vaio PCG-FXA49 which is about a month old... it comes with
"30 gig" of hd... aka as 2 hd that come up as "30 gig". so i erased all of
the mp3s and such on the second hd... and installed linux on that. so i
dual boot...
it shouldn't void any warranty, but i'd backup everything and format it if
you have to send it in...

Yes, thats what I'm thinking.. partition it and try to do a dualboot
xp/suse. Then if I need to sevice it, just blow out the linux partition and
format it for XP.
Backup wouldnt be a problem since I have my other computer.
Btw, its a Dell, not a Compaq =) And no I didnt have a choice of operating
system. XP is preinstalled on it and on the XP CD-rom it clearly says that
its
"only for use on Dell computers".

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 that is configured for dual boot with XP and SuSE 8.0. I used the XP CDROM to re-install XP from scratch. Since this is a true install (rather than a ghost image), I was given the opportunity to partition the disk drive. I created one for XP and one for Linux. The only thing I use XP for is to run a couple of games. Everything else is on Linux. I now have this system to the point where I can do most of my remote work support from Linux. Dave Sand
