And the costs keep mounting. I'd have to drive about 70 miles, just to get to the border. Nearest friend in the U.S. is hundreds of miles further in. All this to save what, $6???

Have Amazon US ship it to you. They won't charge PST/GST [Don't tell] and they ship quicker then Amazon Canada. They even ship Canada Post! Nick

I see that it can even be added to a wedding registry. I should have mentioned this to my niece, who's getting married on Saturday. ;-) I just tried to place an order and found they don't ship software to Canada. They will ship books, DVDs etc.

As a FYI, I had one version shipped from the SuSE store in California some time back. It was shipped by FedEX and I had to pay Duty and GST. Camelot doesn't have that problem. Mike

You should be paying GST etc., no matter which way it comes. Either you pay it directly or as part of the price to Camelot. How does the bottom line cost compare?

Cheaper to order from Camelot, there's no duty to pay the GST on top of. If they actually hit the stores in a decent amount of time, I'd pick one up in a bookstore over in the US and get it even cheaper.

If there's duty on the package, then Camelot or their supplier will pay it, when it enters the country. At Camelot it would be included in their price, not a separate item. The question remains, what is the total cost from Camelot vs importing it from the U.S. I bought 9.3 via Camelot and their price was much higher than the U.S. price, even after exchange. They also weren't able to ship, for several weeks after it shipped in the U.S..

this is usually not a good idea, as custom-duties don't always open the packets, so one in a while one can escape duties :-) better chance is a friend ship it to you in a bulk envelope, without the real (unusefull) box. jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr

Just as another data point, Amazon UK states October 28th, price is £35.99. (Shipping is free, 2-5 days.) It also says that the ELSPA minimum age for this software is three. There will be a lot of disappointed two year old free software fans this Christmas ;) -- Bill

Order Date: September 16, 2005 Order #: ###-#######-####### Recipient: Randall Schulz Items not yet shipped: Delivery estimate: October 5, 2005 * 1 of: SuSE Linux 10.0

That sounds quite pessimistic. Perhaps Amazon Prime members are given preference when there's a backlog or advance orders accepted, though I'd doubt it. Actually, now that you mention this, I noticed just the other day that the stated delivery date was the better part of a month off (late): Order Date: September 17, 2005 Order #: ###-#######-####### Recipient: Randall Schulz Items shipped on September 21, 2005: Delivery estimate: October 11, 2005 - October 19, 2005 1 package via UPS with tracking number ################## * 1 of: Linear Algebra This package arrived today. Given that it was shipped with second-day service, this seems like a completely erroneous estimate. Maybe that's what's happening with your order.
Hence the overstatement of ship dates heavily on the plus side of expected real date, no doubt atol.
My experience with Amazon, which is getting to be quite a bit, is that most of the time they're on-time or ahead of time w.r.t. these projections. On rare occasion, they've been late. This is mostly true when the order was accepted far in advance of the projected availability date. There was one item (neither book nor software) that was on back-order. I gave them two extensions on the delivery date and the called it quits. Randall Schulz

Ignorance on whose part? I'd agree that Africa is a prominent beggar. If only Alex realized that Africa is not one country. It would be like saying all Americans are a$$holes and idiots because of the actions of one American. I'm not responding to his post because this is going to turn out in another political battle. Maybe Alex should familiarize him/herself with African culture, tradition and religion and then use that to make suggestions to his government on how they would actually be making an impact with the billions of $$$ and humanitarian aid they are sending. While he/she is at it, have a look at the technology developed in Africa used by the American Military amongst others. I'll start with radar and heads up display. I was merely stating that Africa was forgotten when Novell decided to throw in free shipping on preordered SuSE 10. Interesting seeing that Novell has a very prominent base in South Africa and they are pushing SuSE very hard here against a very powerful MS. As for moving to a first world country, I tried it but there is something about South Africa which most people who haven't lived here will never understand. Something which you do not find in any other country in the world. Albert -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. I think you'll find, if you look, that the developed countries have gotten far more billions of $$$ in resources out of Africa then they will ever give back. Poverty and wealth are just as much a function of initial conditions as ability and desire. Jerome

I refuse to deal with UPS on imported itmes, as they have incredibly high charges for bringing stuff across the border. I've never had any problems with Fedex (perhaps because my cousin used to work there? <g>).

I found FedEX to be too troublesome to get to from my place. So I order from Camelot.ca, and the CanPost it. Works for me. They'll put it between the doors, FedEX won't. Mike
