[SuSE Linux] Re: Slackware -> SuSE 5.3

I'm in the process of trying to install 5.3 on a machine that has been happily running an old Slackware kernel 1.1.59 system. However, I get the red screen of death, with no option but to reboot, and no information except "An error occurred during installation!"
Just a guess Jim, but when did you aqquire the cds? Their was a bug in the english version that was first released Im sure they are distributing the fixed vers by now, but your problem sounds similar to the install problem from the first release.
Looking at the 2 cds side by side there is no difference Id guess it it would matter when you aqqired it.
Thanks for the info, Rob, I acquired the CDs with the VA28 workstation I bought from VA Research back in early October, 1998. With a bout of flu, and an inclination toward paranoia making me read the manual a lot, I didn't get around to trying to install SuSE on my old machine, so that I could network the two of them together, until this weekend, Nov 22. Maybe I'm cheating in using the VA package and registration code with the old machine, but I've never been able to get a response from support@suse.com to any of my earlier questions, ones I asked in anticipation of wiping out my old Slackware distribution with the SuSE 5.3. The fellow I talked to on the phone at SuSE when I bought WABI said "just go ahead and email your questions, and they'll register you on the fly." So today, I finally mailed off the postcard, and I'll see if that makes a difference. Having been used in the past to totally unsupported installations (InfoMagic Slackware) and having them install seamlessly, it was quite a shock to run into this brick wall. A bug in the distribution would be a happy explanation. After all these years of boasting of Linux's excellence to my colleagues, it's very disconcerting to not be able to install a brand new office-grade distribution on my old machine, which was, at the time, designed specifically for Linux compatibility.
