[opensuse] updater and purging items from an unused repo ...
How do I "clear out" items from the installer that were added from the (now disabled) gnome repo? Here is the background: I was trying to update my evolution, so I added a gnome repo (GNOME:/STABLE/SUSE_Linux_10.1/ at repos.opensuse.org) to installation sources. Well, there were issues getting evo upgraded, so I am moving on for now. Next project was to follow the JEM report "hacking SUSE linux enterprise", to enable multimedia support on this SLED10 box .. well, I have disabled and turned refresh off for the gnome repo, but ... when I go into the updater, all of the gnome-related stuff is still there. I'm not sure what to include or exclude on this update ... I really would like this just to be clean. Suggestions? damn, thought I had it. I unloaded the updater, and then did this: rczmd stop rm /var/lib/zmd/zmd.db rczmd start Then reloaded the updater and did a refresh. And, it is STILL chock full of "gnome repo" goodies that I do not want! What to do with this? so, I guess now it worked ... I think inititally I copied the zmd.db to a new name, and did not rm the original one. Anyway ... now, when I go into the updater, there are only 8 updates available, and they are generic "SUSE Linux 10.1 FTP" and etc ... none of the items that should have been available from the packman and other repos that would then get me multimedia support. GRRRR I'm trying to follow the jem report ... any ideas here, folks? Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You just cleared zen, including certain updates that were legit. To put things back in sync, try running YAST Online Update. Greg W -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I had something very similar happen not long ago. After removing /var/lib/zmd/zmd.db and doing a 'rug refresh' I had only two updates available, *both were the same*, something like Suse_10.1_dvd_x86_64 I don't remember exactly, but there was "dvd" and "64" in there and I don't even have a 64 bit system :-( It eventually just went away, and one day, a few days later, I had regular updates again. I did not remove and reinstall the installation sources, and I did not run YAST online-update either in that period of time, although they might have been useful approaches. I don't recall, but I may have rebooted in that time, but not immediately before it started working. One thing you might want to try is to drop to runlevel 1 and then back to 5 (or rebooting for a more drastic step). This seems to sometimes help ZEN/ZMD along when merely stopping/restarting ZMD doesn't quite do it. Hope this helps. -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

hmm .. I have rebooted (this is my laptop, so it's common). Now when I look at the updater, there are only 4 updates, 2 items duplicated: SUSE-Linux-Enterprise-Desktop-i386 (i686) Type: Product status (in "details") "uninstalled" translation-update (noarch) type: patch status "uninstalled" ???HUH??? Anyway, so I tried Yast Online Update ... it found tons of items, including security updates, but ALL of them were flagged "keep" and "update" was not available to choose (it was greyed out). Plus, there were no details, or version info or anything about any of the items. Weird. I clicked accept and ... the window just went away. Good grief. Anyone have an idea? Is this a "bug" or somewhow expected/normal behavior? Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In 10.1, YaST online update shows all patches, even ones that have been installed. These are shown as blue checks. The new ones to install would be shown with a black check.

If there were no new patches to install, the window just closes when you click accept. In that sense I believe that would count as expected behavior. However, that still doesn't help with the other issues. What happens in YaST online update if you filter by installation source? Which installation sources show up? -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So you also upgraded GNOME and then found evolution ceased working? I had the same experience on 10.0 a week or so ago. I am living with kmail now and I must say, evolution deals with IMAP servers with many sub-folders MUCH better than the current kmail. Well you may want evolution back because you are familiar with it, but that's no reason to badmouth Kmail. I've heard the same "I want it back" lament about outlook express. I've found Kmail dealing with Imap to be flawless, fast, and accurate. In fact for multiple mail servers and multiple accounts and keeping them all separate and using the proper outgoing server for each account, I haven't seen anything that can hold a candle to Kmail. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

no, I did not upgrade gnome .. I added the gnome repo in an attempt to upgrade EVO -- but that upgrade process failed due to unresolved dependencies. EVO still "works" though, I am not very pleased with it (which is why I was hoping to upgrade ...) I then just dropped it and moved on ... which is where trying to get rid of the stuff from the gnome repo comes in ... I was not so lucky. The gnome update for 10.0 that came out a bit back did not, I see now, include an update to evolution. The gnome update for 10.2 does include evolution, which was my error. I mixed the info in my simple brain. I think the issue is that the gnome upgrade went to a new release number, which includes moving icons and who knows what else to a new directory. Oddly, the gnome upgrade seems to have removed older gnome components that were in their own directories minding their own business. The gnome update I did was from a directory marked stable. I also see warnings like: GtkWarning: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "qtengine", when starting any apps that use gtk. This includes firefox, acroread, smart (with --gui). But they at least seem to run ok. Only evolution is stuck in a futex() call. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
