[opensuse] New clock/calendar "feature"
I don't know when it came in, but there seems to be a significant change made to the clock & calendar in KDE on 12.1. Previously, I could click on the clock on the bar, to see the calendar and then close it when I was done. This worked well for years. Now, clicking on the clock causes a small rectangle with the word "Calendar" on it. I then have to click on that, to open the calendar. Then instead of simply closing the calendar, I have to click again on the clock to close the calendar. At least that's the way it's apparently supposed to work. I now have a small square sitting above my bar, which I cannot open further or close. The only way to get rid of it is to log out of the desktop. I guess this is another "improvement" that we can thank the KDE team for. They have an excellent record of taking something that works well and then breaking it. Why couldn't they have left well enough alone? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Change for the sake of change without regard to better or worse? Programmer playground? Once you get to the top, the only place to go is down? Apparently with KDE, trajectory remains the same until either getting to the other end of the range, or until enough people complain or move to some other DE. Luckily for openSUSE users, KDE3 remains one of those other options even in 12.1. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi James, On my 12.1 the calender works okay. If, once the calendar is open, I click on the little square with "14" inside in the upper left corner, it closes to the box above the task bar as you describe. Double-clicking on the box, or single-clicking on the "14" box will open it up again. It all closes when I click on the clock in the task bar. Just don't click on the "14" icon. BTW, what's the significence of the "14" anyway? The tooltip that opens up says, "Collapse this widget". When it works, the above is little more than an annoying waste of clicks. The problem is I am occasionally left with an inaccessable calendar. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

But as long as you just click on the clock in the task bar it behaves as before. One click to open, one click to close. Nothing wasted. Regards, Lew -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No that is not what's happening. It now takes two clicks to get to the calendar, because that rectangle with "Calendar" on it appears first. However, that's the case when it works. At the moment, I can't even do that as clicking on the clock produces a small square and I never get to see the calendar. Clicking on the square does nothing and repeated clicks on the clock simply open and close the square. As I mentioned, this is a fairly recent change. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

So what did you recently change? KDE version. If no packages changed it was some change to the config. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I only changed what came down as part of the Software Update. I don't recall changing anything KDE related. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

On my system, once the calender is collapsed with the "14" button, clicking on the task bar clock just opens and closes the small rectangular calendar box. Try double-clicking on the box to see if it opens to the full calender. If it does, just don't hit the "14" box again. At least this is the way it works on this end. This is not a change in KDE4, the default behaviour has not changed in any KDE4 release. One click to open the calendar, one click to close it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Except, as I mentioned earlier, that's not what's happening. If it was, I wouldn't have posted the message. Recently, I started having to click twice to get to the calendar and now, I can't even see it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I have attached a PNG of this and sent it to you as well as the list, as IIRC the list doesn't pass attachments.

I was more interested in what Lew called "14" button than in what you managed to break and try to sell as KDE4 feature/change, attracting the usual KDE4 haters and KDE3 fan boys. :) Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

James, Are you saying that the notebook is running a different version of either openSUSE and/or KDE? Which one(s)? What happens when you click the "14" button on the notebook? Does it match what Lew described? If it does, what other differences exist between the notebook and the desktop? This sounds more like a bug than a "feature," intentional or not. FWIW, calendar works fine (as Lew describes) on my openSUSE 12.1 / KDE 4.7.x laptop, running NVIDIA drivers. Ah, forget everything I said. That's not the rectangular box that I see. Your box reminds me of issues I used to have with nvidia drivers. I haven't seen those for a long time. I'm talking about the digital clock at the right end of the bar that's been there for years. It has always worked well, until this recent change.
Did you try with a new user?
No, I live alone and neither my dog nor cat use the computer. ;-) Another user would certainly give me a clock initially, but this is an intermittent problem. It works until it fails and then I can only fix it by logging out of the desktop. Right now, when I click on the clock, that small square is all that appears. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It works the same way as previously, and as it worked since it was introduced in kde3. The only missing thing is top line with calendar icon, the one with few times mentioned number "14" on it. openSUSE 12.1 KDE 4.8.00 (4.8.0 "release 2") from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/48/openSUSE_12.1/ GT 210, low power PCIe card under nouveau. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
