XMMS and amarok fails to play .mp3-files
Hello, I'm trying to get xmms and/or amarok to play mp3 files, however, xmms just won't play them, with the message: /usr/lib/xmms/General/libir.so: undefined symbol: irapp_thread amaroK just won't play the files, or skips through the playlist really fast, and I can't get an errormessage because amaroK refuses to start via the terminal. This is OpenSUSE alpha 2 xmms 1.2.10 installed via YaST and amaroK that came with SUSE or is installed via YaST, can't remember. It's probably worth noting that I know my soundcard works, and that I know mplayer plays mp3 files just fine. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards Jon Jahren

Hi again, I added the repositories on the page, reinstalled amaroK and xmms, and still the same, but now amaroK reports from the command line: "QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for PlaylistWindow/PlaylistWindow STARTUP TagLib: MPEG::Header::parse() -- Invalid sample rate. TagLib: MPEG::Header::parse() -- Invalid sample rate. TagLib: MPEG::Header::parse() -- Invalid sample rate. TagLib: MPEG::Header::parse() -- Invalid sample rate." And xmms does: /usr/lib/xmms/General/libir.so: undefined symbol: irapp_thread Still. On Tue, 2005-11-01 at 20:48 +0200, Ilker wrote:

Not sure what is wrong with XMMS, it's unusual that it doesn't work. I have even updated to the packman build and still no mp3 playback, plus the main window looks funny, which leads me to believe it's not happy with GTK+ right now. hopefully helpful, Lee -- --- KMail v1.8.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v10.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Living on Earth is expensive, but it does include a free trip around the sun every year.

Hm, I should've guessed as much. However, what I did: I installed the amaroK-arts package, as well as amaroK-gstreamer and amarok-xine, now, amarok-xine just runs through the playlist, amarok-arts complains about no arts, and arts is installed (checked) but I cannot choose arts in control panel -> sound and multimedia -> Sound system, and amarok-gstreamer will sometimes cause amaroK to stop responding. Starting artsd from the command line spawns an infinte amount of "starting artsd"-like messages and it seems to be looping forever.C hoosing the arts enginge does not work after starting artsd.

I like amaroK better anyway ;) Jon

--------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, Jon success here with xmms!
I started experimenting after I saw your last mail with xmms. I noticed it wouldn't even load a mp3 file, it just kicked them out, plus if I loaded a playlist of mp3's, which it would do, I found, when I hit the play button, it just run through the files without playing them! I came to the conclusion there must still be some SuSE provided files installed that was blocking the use of xmms & mp3. I went into YaST2 to investigate and found all xmms files installed were Packman builds except one. The xmms-plugins (suse) conflicted with xmms-lib-mad (packman), so I removed the suse package, installed only Packman builds and there ya go! XMMS now plays & loads without problems, although I still think they need to update it to GTK+ look. Lee

Hi again, I really wish I could report the same luck, however, I am experiencing some very unusual problems. First of all, xmms plays the mp3files, only when being root and executing xmms. I installed only packman-packages(xmms xmms-lib-mad and xmms-lib), I figured it had to be a problem with my sound permissions, but I am a member of the "sound" group, no luck there. I checked the permissions on the mp3files, thinking they were owned by root and such. No luck, I am the owner and has read/write permissions. I also noticed that xmms will only play _one_ mp3, and then give up and refuse to play any more. Jon
