does anybody use hpfs [os2] partition[s] with sus? -- Cheers, Serge [Naggar Consulting]

This is one reason I choose SuSE. Unlike the the head covering distros, SuSE provides HPFS support by default. The installer won't set up /etc/fstab correctly, but once you take care of that yourself, it works fine. -- "Never tire of doing what is right." 2 Thessalonians 3:13 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. Just out of curiosity, why would you want HPFS as opposed to Reiser? ______________________________ Justin Grote Network Architect, CCNA JWG Networks Email: nospam-justin@grote.name (remove nospam-) SMS: nospam-rastan@vtext.com (remove nospam-) Phone: (208) 631-5440 ------------------------------ Original Message Follows ------------------------------ FM> Serge Naggar wrote:

Maybe he also has OS/2 on that computer and wants to share data between systems. Justin Grote wrote:

Well I thought perhaps it was something less obvious than that :) ______________________________ Justin Grote Network Architect, CCNA JWG Networks Email: nospam-justin@grote.name (remove nospam-) SMS: nospam-rastan@vtext.com (remove nospam-) Phone: (208) 631-5440 ------------------------------ Original Message Follows ------------------------------ JK> Maybe he also has OS/2 on that computer and wants to share data between JK> systems. Hi, I also run os2 [hpfs] and dos and a data hpfs partition which I want to be able to access from Suse [ext3]. I also went to suse because I could access hpfs partitions and I did with suse 8.2 However, I have had less rather than more success having linux see the hpfs partition[s] even though suse says it improved the hpfs access. The suse installation-partition sees the hpfs partitions with no problems BUT the `apply' invariably will NOT mount them even though fstab shows them; /dev/hda3[primary] and /dev/hda6[extended]. I used to `see' the hpfs files in suse 8.2 but the problem has gotten worse with 9.0 and 9.1 I did notice that suse 9.1 did get more detailed/elaborate in the qualifying of the hpfs files in fstab but no improvements. Ideas comments welcome! On Fri, 2004-08-06 at 22:59, Justin Grote wrote:

What is "apply"?
fstab shows them; /dev/hda3[primary] and /dev/hda6[extended].
What error message when you try?
I used to `see' the hpfs files in suse 8.2 but the problem has gotten worse with 9.0 and 9.1
What exactly is "the problem"?
I did notice that suse 9.1 did get more detailed/elaborate in the qualifying of the hpfs files in fstab but no improvements.

as below for os/2 ibm had?/have a natty mainframe utility that allows an os/2 workstation have some extra icons on the desktop. The icons are actually programs that live on the mainframe itself and use/require hpfs and the built-in 3270 emulation for access. regards scsijon ps i must admit i hadn't looked at it this way before this email, but I may just have a use for this! :-))}.
