[opensuse] Linux server company info
I'm in the market for a new server for work here. I'm looking for some company that builds server class machines that are pretty much certified to run suse linux either version (enterprise or opensuse). I do not have to the have the os installed on it but it would be ok if it came with the machine. I need a raid 10 setup in the machine. I just want some good sources to start looking at that are known linux vendors. I know I can build my own machine up but at this point I'm ready to get a machine that I know will run suse with no problems, just have to plug the os into the machine an start working. Thanks in advance. Jack Malone -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Please do, they'll appreciate your business & go the extra mile for you. Bear in mind, I'm slightly biased towards them, as they're located in my home town {^_-} Also, note the selection of operating systems that they preinstall {^_^}

Don't ever let somebody else install your server's OS. If they do, nuke it and start again. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Don't ever let somebody else install your server's OS. If they do, nuke it and start again. Well that is normally what I do anyway because I like things done my way. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hey taharka I will give them a look see. Thanks for info. hey jack, i have good experiences with supermicro motherboards, and they specify a compatibilty matrix. They have complete servers, or home grown. But indeed, if you want to be sure, and spend more money, a good server company can be of great help, my linuxjournal is full of these guys....

I agree, very cool stuff too, specially the inside. Every little bit of hardware is (de-)mountable without any tool usage. The Server Management DVD give you choises for SLES or RHE or several flavors of "the others". I've setup a couple of 2950 systems, the customers needed 2003 server on those unfortunatly, but the whole setup is done in a custom Linux environment, which even lets you use X remotely. The only nag was that the IP address, the Linux setup OS uses, happened to be right in the middle of our own LAN range, so a couple of unhappy people came in while I was doing this, asking if I knew about some address, suddenly unavailable to others.. Yup, very nice boxes. Come in a variety of sizes and capabilities. They even sell SLED with them and I highly recommend it for a server. Dell's high mid to high end Poweredge servers are industrial grade, and built to last. I still know where there is one with SuSE Linux 7.0 running from the original installation I did on it when 7.0 was just released. The machine had a nic burned out by a lightning strike and replaced. Other than that its been running all these years, a single purpose machine secured behind a firewall with no reason to update either the hardware or the software. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have looked at dell not that much but I did briefly spec out one machine. My boss is not favor of buying a prebuilt machine, but everyone else including me is ready to go out an get a nice machine that is cerified to run suse on it. I'm quiet tired at this point of the trial an error of the home breew boxes for a server. Now I will continue to spec out boxes for workstations for a while. He keeps harping on that we are farming out our maintance everytime its brought up from anyone but I'm working on him I think a little bit. Again thanks to all who have replied so far. Dell is worth checking. In my case, there was a strong requirement to choose company to make the machine up&running within 24 hours no matter what goes wrong. You can opt for such service and it's much less expensive than the offer I've got from several other local companies. In my case the price of Dell NAS was about the same compared to other offers with the advantage of superior service. I've got PowerEdge 2950 server with directly connected PowerVault MD 1000 (just quite dumb disk enclosure) with 10 750GB disks in RAID5 It came with SLES10 preinstalled (RHEL being other option). All I had to do was the storage and change a few settings in YAST to blend into current network. Works flawlessly, only problem is that I have to buy new switch with port bonding capability because single 1Gb ethernet NIC is sometimes a limitation here. Cheers, Tosuja Jack Malone wrote:

Both HP and IBM provide servers with Enterprise Linux (SuSE or RHEL) installed, fully certified as well as supported directly by HP or IBM. Hp actually has a number of Linux Expertise Centers worldwide with one located in Marlborough, Ma where I used to work. The bottom line with both HP and IBM is that they have agreements directly with SuSE and Red Hat so you have a single point of contact for support. Additionally, my experience with Dell at the Boston Linux (one DEL Poweredge) is that it

All 5 DELL poweredges I've maintain (all but one running multiple years) have never gone down for other than a power failure and a tape drive and nic replacement after a lightning strike near by. They are rock solid as far as I can tell. Nothing against HP or IBM. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
