DNS issues with 9.1, 9.2 and SLES 9
Background: Previously we had a NT domain with the PDC offering DHCP, DNS and WINS services. Pointing to that server from our LINUX machines worked okay… we were able to resolve internal machine names without much problem. We could ping a host, i.e. PING HOST1 and it would resolve with the IP address and fully qualified host name. Problem: We have added a new PDC on a Windows 2000 server which runs mixed NT/AD mode and offers DHCP and DNS services. Once that was done, my older SuSE boxes (9.1 Pro, 9.2 Pro and SLES 9) are no longer resolving internal host names, though they do resolve external addresses. SuSE 9.3 Pro resolves them just fine. I've checked and rechecked the settings in YAST and all of the machines are configured with the same entries. I've tried to research this problem but haven't found anything that would tell me why the versions are behaving differently. Does anyone have an idea why they are behaving as they are and what I have to do to make them work correctly? Thanks in advance for your help. Check /etc/resolv.conf and make sure the nameserver line points to your DNS server. I suspect that it is still pointing to the old server address. Or even better yet, set up a linux box as your DNS server and eliminate problems all around. And yes it can be set up for dynamic updates from your PDC. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
