'Sounds like a video/mouse driver problem...they are VERY common with NT! Even with SuSE and Netscape, and Matrox Mill-II and PS-2 mouse (MickySoft). You'll think that incoming mail or file is "stuck," but if you move the mouse, data will flow again for a period.

I am having similar (thankfully occasional) trouble with Frank's menzioned setup: Matrox Mil II, Pent. II/333, PS2 mouse. Occasional my screen turns black and fraction of a second later back to normal. quite frequent. less frequent: the system crashes on the restart of X (XDM, KDM, after logout) Tried XDM, KDM, div. Win-manager, svga-server, matrox-server, all the same. Suspect the video card, but don't have the nerve to swap it yet with an S3 card. Hi, I had that problem but I solve it changing my video card: Winfast 3D s680 (S3 virge GX2) to Matrox Millenium II.

Himm. My card is slow & dated. But I would rather not change my card if I can help it. I wouldn't get a Matrox Millennium II - slow & bad 3D (compared with other Agp cards in the same price range) - bit too late for you now :-)

One friend had the same problem when working without swap memory. Did you use swap memory?

I have no swap partition - & I didn't set any swap in the install. Where do you turn it off? (I have checked & there is no swap).

My Mouse is a Genius Serial mouse - not PS/2. The problem is not a matter of just the mouse getting stuck - - everything on the computer jams except the reset button. Waiting changes nothing... The problem happens with or without Netscape running. No programme has to be running for this to happen.

Sorry - should have said! : Pentium 2 Trident 9750 chipset video card (cardex 3210). Tekram mainboard - LX type 64 MB ram 3 button logtech compatible mouse (on com1) - serial, not PS/2 - i'm using all three buttons. & a modem that I can't get to work (56k flex [non-win modem] [p&p - drat] [I will have to take the jumpers off] ) IBM Ata4 HDD - 5.9GB Creative Awe 64 pnp - which I haven't even tried to configure yet. - On the video card: It was not supported by the trident driver that came with the first release of SuSE 5.3 . I had read that XFree 3.3.3 had added support for the 975(0). I am not sure if the XFree version that I have is 3.3.3 or 3.3.2.3 - as is says that it is 3.3.2.3 on the box & in Yast, but also says in Yast that it is 3.3.3. (hear that SuSE? :-). Though, the Trident driver (it's called a 'server' yes?) on the CD is the updated one that came out in August & added much better support for the Trident 975(0). I'm a bit confused over the above... But I know that I can run XFree86 with the Trident, Svga or vga & it still runs - but crashes the same. Linux doesn't crash in the consul. Though, Yast crashed twice during installs (I reinstalled a number of times to get partitions & settings right) - bugs? Stopped displaying to the monitor after it started installing a package from CD 2 - & another time for no apparent reason (the Red error dialogue came up!).
