[opensuse] is avahi mandatory
Hello, I just noted that avahi-daemon is taking 50% of my cpu. Is it harmless to remove this? I have no direct use of zeronconf as each time it got in the way it was to do stupid things (like setting unexistent interface) but I don't know the dependencies thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eic8MSSfM http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1412160445 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi jdd I have stopped it and removed it from the init-sequence on the last 2-3 systems I've installed. I think I also saw it using up a lot of CPU. -- /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi jdd
I have stopped it and removed it from the init-sequence on the last 2-3 systems I've installed. I think I also saw it using up a lot of CPU.
Guys, I don't know what I'm doing right, but I've never seen avahi before and I visit top quite often to check on processes and I make a conscious effort to look for any that are making use of the CPU. I've never notice avahi doing anything weird, but sure enough, it is running on my boxes: 22:29 nirvana:~/linux/mysql> ps -elf | grep avahi 5 S avahi 3735 1 0 75 0 - 6872 - Jan08 ? 00:00:00 avahi-daemon: running [nirvana.local] 1 S root 3745 1 0 83 0 - 2513 - Jan08 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/avahi-dnsconfd -D 0 R david 26670 30994 0 78 0 - 1280 - 22:53 pts/0 00:00:00 grep avahi -- David C. rcavahi-dnsconfd stop chkconfig avahi-daemon off do that and try for some days. I did, and so far, I didn't notice anything. I didn't have cpu problems, as far as I can remember, but I don't need it.
but I don't know the dependencies
Just dissable the service for now, remove later - or leave, just in case. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I removed it - most dependencies seems to be from gnome and I don't use gnome jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eic8MSSfM http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1412160445 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If I take away libavahi-client3 I also loose Thunderbird YAST - software managemnt has a "depends on" box. Using that I find I would also loose gnome-vfs - which a lot of my Java applications seem to depend on OUCH! gstreamer - and that takes out a lot of multimedia libdns_sd - which in turn cripples things like k3b, cups, dekorator, kaffine, NetworkManager, compiz-kde Somewhere in there is also a few plugins for Thunderbird and Firefox and also acroread. I'd love to do without the gnome stuff but that doens't look likely. -- People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. . . The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. I forgot "avahi-dnsconfd". Repeat for this one as above. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
