OpenOffice is very nice. I didn't find it any faster than StarOffice 6 Beta 1, but I did find a major difference, OpenOffice has a showstoper bug fix that StarOffice 6 Beta 1 doesn't have - thus only OpenOffice will run on my system. Well, I take that back, StarOffice 5.2 will run on my system, but OpenOffice seems to be light years ahead of that... -Tim -- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. What show stopper bug is that, Tim? I've got SO 6.0 from SuSE 7.3 Pro installed and it runs faultlessly. What differences do you see between SO and OO? Jerry

SO 6.0 Beta 1 has a known incompatibility with KDE 2.2.1 (I found that out from Ben). What it did, was that it would crash whenever I tried to open any menu while using KDE.
What differences do you see between SO and OO?
Well, ofcourse OO lacks OBDC connectivity. Other than that, I found everything about the same (so far as I could tell, since SO wouldn't work for me). It's leaps and bounds ahead of SO 5.2, I can say that. I would assume that OO probably runs a bit better than SO - sorta like Moz runs better than Netscape. -Tim -- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. hum... I never encountered a menu problem with KDE while SO 6 was open. I did notice that the database, form and report design features were not as obvious in SO6 as they were in 5.2. They are there, its just that they are not as obvious, until you get real comforatable with the icons in the left margin. BTW, how did you get to be such a Linux guru? :) Really! JLK

I have SO 6.0 beta on several machines, all running SuSE with KDE 2.2.1. It works OK *except* for on my Thinkpad. I suspect the video driver is what makes the difference. There have been several "fixes" to the Savage driver that were supposed to fix SO hangs/crashes, but none of them have solved the problem for me. Also, I just upgraded to KDE 2.2.2 and it made no difference. -- ____________________________________________________________________ Robert Paulsen paulsen@texas.net

It's been my observation and experience that improper x-server configurations account for 99% of troubles newbies have with Linux and Linux apps. Jerry

This is not my experience at all. Missing libs, library incompatibilities, paths, permissions, DISPLAY variables, other env vars, X-resources, and just plain bugs I think account for a larger chunk that X server config problems. I have found that X server config problems account for some very large proportion of the cases of failing to get a GUI to show up on the screen, have a mouse, etc. But once there is a GUI running, the the problems with apps, in my experience (since about kernel 1.2.8 with Slackware) have always been something other than the X server config. Now it is important here to make the distinction between such things as X server config and X resources. I have problems sometimes (Mathematica and in the past, Xterms--though I don't use that anymore since konsole) with X resources. The only case recently where X server configuration (depending how you look at it) has been the cause of application problems is in trying to get Thai to work. I mean to be able to see Thai characters and type Thai characters. There are serious difficulties with this, and they fall into a very strange category. The stock xkb files that come with X 4.0 and 4.1 don't work. Replacing one of them with a hacked up file from an older version gets things to work. Whether you can call this "X server configuration" or not is debatable, as the files that I have had to modify are other than XF86Config and so aren't really a configuration issue. They are a problem of some other sort, perhaps more similar to a bug. More on this later. -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. SO 6.0 Beta 1 is available from www.sun.com and it's a beta.
The StarOffice that is on SuSE 7.3 is SO 5.2 and is called "so_en" for English users. I also downloaded SO 6.0 Beta 1 for my SuSE 7.2 (before I upgraded) and for my W2K platform at work. Believe it or not, I prefer the 5.2 monolithic layout, with the desktop capture, if desired. JLK

It is called "so_en". I don't know which CD it is on because I chose the "install almost everything" and didn't pay attention to where apps were coming from. Sorry. Jerry

Me too (well not that slow but 64 Mb/s ISDN isn't really fat either) ... but I have a 'free sunday option' at five Deutschmarks a month extra which I used to dl this during my sleeptime for free :-) must have taken around three hours or so ... You need more stuff too? Just one CDR is ineffective for shipping cost :-) ... sending all 6 CDRs and the two floppies from 6.2 to Roman was 16 DEM (that's about 8 USD) and I'm afraid if the letter is just a bit thinner it won't make that much of a difference :-( Or do you live closer to Germany than the USA ???
