Try doing it manually. Watch the boot messages to see what /dev/ gets assigned to the scanner. Then ln -s /dev/sg? /dev/scanner then chmod 777 /dev/sg? If your scanner gets a /dev/sga (letter), then a=0, b=1, etc. Then in X run xscanimage, and select the button that corrsponds to your scanner. A couple of the buttons won't work right, they are for some other purpose?
