[opensuse] no graphics with IBM Netvista
Hello, I installed Suse 10.2 on an IBM Netvista (from 2003) with onBoard graphics. I have a 1280x1024 Monitor, but Suse only boots in text mode (it starts init 5, but that doesn't work then, I just get the text prompt). Typing "init 5" does nothing (prompt appears again, it seems it is in "5" but shows only text-mode). "init 3" shuts down kdm services etc., then "init 5" says "run level 5 has been reached" - but no graphics... Typing "startx" gives ... (EE) No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth. (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found. XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X Server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. I cannot start Sax2. I cannot use the Monitor section of Yast (it doesn't do anything). I cannot boot "failsave" to graphics mode. I tried to play around with different BIOS video settings (there's not much to change), but no difference so far... I cannot iterpret what Sax.log wants to tell me - more than 1000 lines that are just cryptic to me... I've put the log here: http://www.daniel-bauer.com/test/SaX.log What must I do to get it running? How can I change the settings, when neither Sax nor Yast/Monitor nor boot option vga=normal works? Can you help me? If you need further infos, please tell me... thanks Daniel -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Switzerland professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com Madagascar special: http://www.sanic.ch -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Dredge around in /var/log/boot.msg and see if you can provide the specific chipset of the video adaptor. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I guess it's Intel 845G with Intel Extreme Graphics... But after I gave 8MB Memory for the Video in the BIOS it now starts in graphics mode... That is a sign that your BIOS doesn't support this mode. Still i915resolution should patch the bios to make this work, but chances are that it doesn't work with your specific bios.

If you still have problems: You can try the i810beta driver (exchange i810 by i810beta in the Device Section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you don't have that file, or the Device section doesn't use i810, call "sax2 -r -a" first. Thank you, Matthias, for your answer. Meanwhile it runs perfect: I just had to set something in the Bios to "8MB for Video". I was then even able to enable 3D and can run google earth on that PC without any problems. As you are from Suse it might interest you that (except of this BIOS thing) the install (from downloaded CDs) went smothly like a charm: that was really "plug an play"! I received this PC from a company that had W XP on it before. The PC is from 2003 and now unusable for the company because W needs too much resources... it will now be the new PC for my mother and I'm sure all her friends will get jeallous seeing her having such a super modern, fast computer :-) So, once again, I'd like to take the chance and say loud and clear: thanks to all the people at Suse and the Linux community, who make such a fantastic OS!
