Is it possible to just use the vanilla 2.4.22 kernel with SuSE 8.2? I discovered the SuSE experimental RPM for 2.4.21 made by Mantell or Mandell. I have been using that. I was just wondering if when you want to upgrade the kernel do you just grab the latest. I come from Gentoo and Slackware so building a kernel is not a problem for me. Sean

Running vanilla 2.4.22 on 8.2 as I type this. Works just fine. Just do your normal thing and grab the latest. Also grab the latest modutils but you probably know that..... :-)

You have to use the latest gcc from ftp://ftp.suse.com/projects/gcc or you get a panic on boot. The only other problem may be with the audio, SuSE have added alsa, the vanilla 2.4 kernels still use OSSFree. You can download the alsa stuff -- i've not had 100% success with this, especially the microphone didn't work when I was sending audio from it across the network. A bit later, I'm going to reboot on 2.4.23-pre9 with alsa on my laptop that is currently running 2.4.23-pre8 that was built under 8.2 and is running on 9.0 without a problem. Regards Sid.
