[SuSE Linux] X questions
I have two X-related questions: Is there a way of copying an entire file to the X clipboard. I picture a command line tool: which copies the contents of averylongfile.txt to the X clipboard. Then I could paste it using Netscape's or Emacs's paste command. And, is there a way of assigning dedicated COPY and PASTE keys? I grew very used to those under Solaris/OpenWin. Select something in any X program, hit COPY, move somewhere else, hit PASTE. Very, very useful. I'd like FRONT too, but I'll settle for COPY/PASTE first. Just use the mouse to copy/paste stuff from app to app. Most applications allow this even term windows. Probably the only one that doesn`t play ball is tkdesk. You`ll need 3 button emu for all this to work though. So select what you need, usual way. This copies. Then hit L/R mouse together to paste. -- Myfish. But what if I want to copy a 500-line text file? It's rather tedious to select it 50 lines at a time. - Scott - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

This indeed is true, but you can use edit/select/all then use the double mouse click to paste. Or if you are using massive text files just use the cat command to append one file to another. -- Myfish. I am just curious as to whether anyone has been able to achieve such a copy/paste feat in this manner from an X (or a WINE app) to WP8? On 18-Jan-99 Keith White wrote:

I tried it with wp7 and it works. I can copy from Netscape, an xterm, or WABI. WABI does require you to use the Control-C and Control-V sometimes, instead of the mouse. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

I also would like to know how to do that in X. Under Windows I used Perl (and Aldo Calpini's modules) to support command line piping to and from the clipboard, which was very useful, and sorely missed (that capability, not Windows!). -- Ken Irving -- jkirving@mosquitonet.com Trident Software -- <A HREF="http://www.mosquitonet.com/~jkirving/trident</A">http://www.mosquitonet.com/~jkirving/trident</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Here are some techniques I have found useful: I'm using a 2-button mouse with 3-button emulation. When using Netscape, and need to copy in a file, I have resorted to FILE/New/NavigatorWindow, then OPEN PAGE and load the text file. Then Select All, and Copy. Also, sometimes when going between other applications, the mouse "both-click to paste" won't work, but the conventional Control-V will. Netscape likes to use Alt-C and Alt-V to copy and paste. WABI applications like to use Control-C and Control-V. Other apps may have their own special keys You can copy text from an xterm by "less somefile.txt" then left-click and drag to highlight the selected portion, then "simultaneous-click" to paste in another app. If using MC, you can hit view or edit on a text file, hold down the Shift button while left-clicking and dragging to highlight selected text. Then "simultaneous-click" to paste. For some unknown reason, I have never tried EMACS. :-) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
