[opensuse] TechniSat DVB-T AirStar 2 (PCI) digital receiver
I bought the above digital tuner card and it works very well in XP. I'm told that it also works well with Linux which is where I want it and not in XP and which is why I bought it. Could someone please tell me what software I need on 10.2 to be able to use this card, and also point me at any documentation explaining in clear terms how to install and configure such software and the card. In XP it only took several minutes to get this card set up and working and I am hoping that there is something equivalent for 10.2. Cheers. -- In a period of great joy and pleasure you are comforted by the thought that tragedy is just around the corner. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The question, "will it work on Linux?" is one which should be asked *before* hardware is purchased. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

But that is not the question I asked above - and have no intention of asking. From the site where I bought the card: QUOTE- The TechniSat AirStar 2 DVB-T card is from one of Europe's most popular DVB cards manufacturers. Supports all Australian DVB-T formats including 1080i HDTV (MP&HL), SDTV, AC3 Audio. Linux Supported UNQUOTE -- In a period of great joy and pleasure you are comforted by the thought that tragedy is just around the corner. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

According this link, it should work: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Technisat_AirStar2 You may try with kdetv to watch the card. Also, mythtv forums, lists and IRC channel are very helpful for everything related to tv tuner cards. -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I was hoping against hope that nobody would mention Mythtv :-) . I heard about it some time back and had a quick look at it then and found that I didn't have the appropriate academic qualifications to operate it. But maybe the link you give above will contain some comprehensible material for me to get the software to work with the card so I'll go and have a look :-) . Thanks for your info., greatly appreciated. My intention was not to say what software to use. While mythtv is excellent piece of software, and I use it for almost an year now, the idea of my post was that myth community is a great resource of tips and tricks for everything related to tv capturing in Linux. So, according to the link, the support for this card should be included in the recent kernels, and should work out of the box.

I know - I wasn't chastising you for mentioning Mythtv :-) . I may have to refer to that community for ideas but to get myself going I just discovered, following your comment that the latest kernel does dvb out of the box, that kaffeine does dvb! In fact it just scanned in all the channels for au-Canberra! Only problem with all this is that I am getting an error message from kaffeine, "Can't bind info socket!" which I haven't a clue what it means :-( . I just a very quick look at the doc for kaffeine but can't readily see what needs to be done. Sigh. Never a simple and quick solution :-) . I must get to bed so will pursue kaffeine after some sleep. (I've got this terrible feeling that something has to be done in the firewall settings to allow the dvb card to be recognised - and I know bugger-all about the firewall and its workings! :-( .) Cheers. -- In a period of great joy and pleasure you are comforted by the thought that tragedy is just around the corner. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well! :-) . kaffeine is working b-e-a-u-t-ifully with the TechniSat card and now I have digital on 10.2 :-) . XP -- PPHHTT! Actually, getting kaffeine to work with the dvb card was a lot simpler than with XP! The only hassle I had - as I mention above - is with the error message, "Can't bind info socket!" which is simply caused by having the DVB CLIENT selected when there is no reason to have it selected because you don't need it to watch TV. Once I deselected Dvd Client it all started work beautifully :-) . Thanks to everyone for the help in this matter. (Now I can watch in HD format the next Ashes cricket Test using Linux instead of watching the last Test using XP :-) .)
