Nvidia cards, Doom 3, mboards, sad men
Tragically, I've decided I probably can't go to my grave without playing Doom3, addicted as I was to its predecessors for much of the nineties. Doom probably retarded my thesis by two years and in world terms probably slowed academic activity by something like 25 per cent, meaning we could probably be a happier, better race by now without it. But hey, it's a good game ... More tragically still, I expect that means I will need a PC with a 'doze partition in order to play, something I've not had for a year or two (tell me if you've heard different) and a fancy new graphics card, those recommended appear to be the NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra, GeForce 6800 GT, GeForce 6800 GTO*, GeForce 6800, and GeForce 6800 LE. Anyone using these with success under 9.2? As I will be using SuSE exclusively for everything except Doom, I need to know they'll have a good 2d performance with plenty of good colours for graphics work and sharpness for text work. Any negative comments received gratefully too. And if anyone wants to tell me what motherboard / processor combinations they're using with the above, that would be great too, Best Fergus -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB Tel: +44 161 834 7961 Fax: +44 161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk

One of my side projects is a ps-tetris, modeled after ps-doom. Unfortunatley I spend so much time on UI research I havnt time for anything else :)

Oh no you dont, ID Software have always been very friendly to the linux community: http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ Heck they even host their own bittorrent tracker.

I havnt used any of the gfx cards you've listed, but I've used both Nvidia and ATI cards under linux, and have to say that the Nvidia cards were far easier to enable 3d support with and performed much better than the ati counterparts and have no reason to think that this has changed. Infact iirc Nvidia seem to be devoting more and more support to linux, so it might well have improved. BTW, were lacking a speaker for this months manlug meeting. If you get it going do you think you might be able to do a short talk? Regards, Ben

The good news: Doom3 can be played natively under linux http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ All the videocards you mention work just fine under suse 9.2 (make sure to get the latest nvidia drivers), however, be aware that many of these require (a lot) of extra power. I have a geforce 6800 sitting here that I cannot use (yet) as it requires (at least) a 500W power supply, and the machine I wish to use it in has only a 250W . And the 500W is a hard limit. I've tried the card in a machine with a 480W powersupply and it didn't work/ Currently listening to: pj2003-07-08d2t04 Gerhard, (faliquid@xs4all.nl) == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O Allways look at the bright side of life =`\<, but (=)/(=) that's only possible from the Dark Side

Yes, excellent! Wonderful stuff, I will make sure to drop ID a line and congratulate them.

Bleh! I'd have thought 480 a whacking heavy-duty server PS. Well, I suppose if I'm building a new PC anyway I can incorporate such a power supply. I'll admit though, seems a very un-green thing to be doing just to play a game ... Thanks Gerhard, very useful warning, I would never have guessed that.

Well, you can buy a 5200 (for $25) and play doom3 with that. You should be able to get about 10fps that way (I should know, Im still stuck with a 5200 ;) ), and of course, there are 6600s and 6800s that require less power (though they're harder to find, and are usually even more expensive) Currently listening to: pj2003-07-08d3t02 Gerhard, <faliquid@xs4all.nl> == The Acoustic Motorbiker == -- __O Choices allways were a problem for you =`\<, What you need is someone strong to guide you (=)/(=) Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow What you need is someone strong to guide you ... like me

Come on.. I have a 5200FX with 128 bit memory interface (you might be stuck with a 64 bit one), and I played Doom3 reasonably in Linux, in 800x600 with high details. A good buy at this time could be a GeForce 6600 or FX5700 (not LE).

Thanks Silviu, I'm gradually getting enough information ... but I'm definitely going to play it under Linux! Cheers Fergus -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB Tel: +44 161 834 7961 Fax: +44 161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk
Is there a particuliar reason not to use the FX5700? It is already too late for me but I would like to understand the comment. Silviu Marin-Caea wrote:

You know, it would STILL be worth it. By the way, anyone see any tutorials for Doom and Linux? It's been a while and I had read one but can't find it.

I do have to admit ID is very cool about things. Which is a reason I be sure to BUY from them. It's weird isn't it? They release free copies of their games and are Linux friendly, and THAT makes me buy the stuff ;)

DOOM IS NOT JUST A GAME !!!!!! GOOD GOD! *Cries* Doom is beyond "Just" a game. I got the Doom Collector's set for Christmas and let me tell you, I may not have had a computer when it came out but let me tell you, I PLAYED DOOM FOR 12 HOURS. The only game I could ever handle that long was Unreal Tournament, and Twisted Metal 2. That's it.

Just a side note, those cards mentioned I would guess what is recommended for really smooth high resolution high detail game play. I've seen Doom 3 works quite alright on a GeForce 56000 Go (notebook) with 64mb vram (dedicated in that case). I think it was running in 800x600. I've also seen it on a middle-of-the-range nVidia card with 128mb - can't remember the model. This was on an athlon64 with 1gb ram, it ran at 1280x1024 32bit colour with all detail levels turned all the way up, and it was super smooth. It runs smoothly at 640x480 on my old Radeon 7500 128mb (crappy PowerColor card with buggy firmware - don't ever buy PowerColor), but I suspect the lack of performance in higer resolutions might also have something to do with the fact that my PC has SD-RAM, and not a lot of it either. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

I've got an nVidia GeForce ti 4200 and it works fine and dandy.
Anyone using these with success under 9.2? Got doom3 installed, with the latest patches and it works fine. There's one "glitch" and it's the sound. Supposedly the new Doom patch (1286 I think) works both for alsa and oss, but here it doesn't work with alsa ... it results in distorted sound. Supposedly it also has 6 channel sound, so you can hear'em sneak up behind you :-) but I'm stuck with using oss sound emulation with alsa ... it works, for now.
There's a "linux" game engine to be downloaded, on your favourite 3D planet ... and you install it, wherever you want, followed by any patches you need. After that, you pick up your CD and install the necessary pack file from it ... you need the CD, as it may ask you for the license key like it does in Quake.
As I will be using SuSE exclusively for everything except Doom, I need to know they'll have a good 2d performance with plenty of good colours for graphics work and sharpness for text work. Any negative comments received gratefully too. I've had three negative experiences ... one is sound, which doesn't appear to be all that good. Then the bios, that one I had to upgrade ... newer mobo's come with that upgrade, I had to install. The third, is my PSU ... with the AMD64, use a minimum of 350W PSU.
And if anyone wants to tell me what motherboard / processor combinations they're using with the above, that would be great too,

Fergus I'm not competent to advise on hardware but have you thought of trying Cedega from Transgaming to play games on Linux ? I'm running 9.2 and I have a GeForce FX 5200. My son is a gamer, because he presently lives in Africa he only visits from time to time. When he was here at Xmas we installed Cedega and he got Half Life 2 running on it. You have to subscribe but its only GBP8.00 for 3 months and give plenty of support and access to upddates etc. According to the site Doom3 should work. www.transgaming.com gives details. Mike
