Using openSUSE 11.1 (i686, 32-bit) I have just upgraded to KDE 4.3.1 (Rel 163) a couple of days back. On enabling the desktop folder view [Pict 1], I am getting the following errors: - Any folder on the desktop opens with Gwenview on clicking it (should open w/ Dolphin or Konqueror, by default) - Both, Konqueror & Dolphin show all the application files as files with the [.dektop] extension. [Pict 2] - On trying to run any application on the desktop, it gives an error message, which shows the file as a <.desktop> file and says that the file should be executable to run (checking properties of the file, all are executable, as they are applications). This happens with all apps on desktop: Firefox, OpenOffice.org Starter, etc. (Images [3], [4] - these are for Firefox, but happens with any app/shortcut on the desktop). However, the apps can be run from the Kicker Menu. Any suggestions to fix the problem, because in all other respects, KDE 4.3.1 seems stable and functional. In the case of image 3, this is normal behavior now. The first time you run an executable application from a desktop icon, you are asked if it's OK... if you click Continue, it will remember that decision for that application for that user ID. It's a security level of sorts... to help prevent you accidentally launching an unknown executable I guess... No, I have never seen this type of behavior on either openSUSE 11 (initial install & later on on upgrade to KDE 4.2.2) or with Fedora 10 / Ubuntu 9.04) - all desktop icons when double-clicked run the a particular app & there are no pop-up boxes. Also, I've never seen any desktop icon/app having a [.desktop] extension [5].

Further observations on this somewhat erratic behaviour: - Any desktop folder (I have 3 folders on the KDE 4.3.1 desktop), when clicked, opens up with Gwenview instead of the default Konqueror/Dolphin file managers [6]. - All desktop icons have a [.desktop] extension [5] ; never seen this anywhere else including openSUSE 11 with KDE 4.2.2. (Am attaching a screengrab for 'Properties' of Mozilla Firefox, as an example [7], there seems to be nothing wrong with those.)

And as I said.. this is "normal" _now_ not with previous releases. I never saw it before either, but you've updated to 4.3.1.. right? Things have changed from 4.2 to 4.3. One of the changes includes the check on executables with the Continue button. This was discussed briefly on the list a while back as well. It shows up on the first time the app is clicked from a Desktop icon. Just to be clear, I am referring only to case 3 in the various cases/screencaps you provided in your original email - not the isse with things opening in Gwenview etc.

Do you have Dolphin installed? I've seen this also discussed here on the mailing list, and the problem with that case was that the person had not installed Dolphin (or it was removed for some reason from their setup). After reinstalling Dolphin, things returned to normal. I don't know if this is your issue.. just stating what was previously discussed. I don't think I can agree there with you, have not read about this sort of behav w/ KDE 4.3.1 before anyhwhere (including openSUSE & Ubuntu Forums). Prior to this upgarde, KDE 4.3.0 worked ok without such any errors.

Yes Dolphin & Konqueror, but the image above is of Konqueror.

Agree or not... that's how it is. In this particular case (case 3 in your original email), it's not an error. When you click on an application on the KDE4 desktop for the first time (including the first time after the upgrade that included the new desktop security code), you get a popup that asks if you want to continue. If you click Continue it should not ask you again for that app and that user. You are welcome to disagree with me... but... you are seeing it... and I'm telling you you're not the only one who sees it. It is something that has been explicitly added to KDE4. This was discussed on the kde-core-devel mailing list. For example: http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-core-devel&m=123562332503129&w=2 This behavior was also mentioned at least once in the openSUSE Forum: http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/417506-warning-plasma-workspace.html Why do I let myself be pulled into these arguments? Sigh. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

From the discussions on openSUSE Forums, most who have upgraded to KDE 4.3.1 do not have this problem (at least have not reported it), the user in the thread may have the same (putative) bug as I do.
About the KDE Development Mail List link you referred to: I am not a programmer & just a regular user so the technical part I could not follow; but the tone of the conversation was that the <.desktop> file extension was into some controversy amongst the developers. [From Rajko]
It happens only on first start, and if you cancel that it will happen again. Once you say that is OK to run that application, the icon will change and you will never see that again.
And it keeps happening /each/ time I click on an app icons on the desktop, does not happen when an application is launched from the main menu. Refer to image [4] again: [2] > [3] > [4] happen each time I click on an app icon from the desktop folder. I tried logging in as 'root' into KDE 4.3: the icons there do not have this <.desktop> extension and the app (eg OO.org) is correctly launched on clicking the desktop folder icon: there are no pop-up boxes, even the first time. GNOME or Xfce do not have pop-up boxes for regular or root users; it seems to be an unnecessary feature, if at all it was introduced by design (as a security measure ?). [From Basil]
Under Desktop Settings>File Manager so you have Dolphin selected or is it set to the default Gwenview?
I un-installed Gwenview & now the folders open with Dolphin. Again, this did not happen as 'root'. Anyway, I hope upgrading to a later release of KDE (4.4 ?) would solve this problem. Will try out Rajko's suggestion of deleting and creating fresh shortcuts for the apps also. This was not clear from your original email. Happening once is normal... happening each time is not normal.

Another thought... since things worked ok in a "new" user.. ie you logged in as root and things worked normally... have you doen as I and many others have done and gone through incremental upgrades along the path from 4.0.3 to 4.3.1? If you have, have you at any point in that upgrade process started with a fresh KDE4 config? My system was bordering on unusable around the time I got to 4.3.0 alpha... I did a complete wipe of all KDE4 directories, forcing a complete reset to defaults after my KDE 4.3.0 update. The result is that most of these weird bugs - mainly the ones only I saw, and no one else was encountering - went away. I still see the common known bugs of course.... but the clean start for KDE4 cleared away the odd behavior like what you're encountering.... just a thought since you mentioned that logging in with another user seemed to work OK. Along with all your settings for virtually every application in kde. This has always been a bugaboo about a kde refresh. There should be two directories .kde, for stuf strictly concerning the functioning of kde desktop, and .kde-personal where email account settings, kong bookmarks, wallets, addressbooks, mailboxes, etc. But unless or until that happens: You can often just nuke .kde/share/config and still retain some hope of recovery of your personal information. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
