Hello SuSE folkz, In our eng.dept. we're looking to standardize on a single uniform Linux graphical environment. Could somebody please give me an advise what is more convenient to use with less system resources consumption? KDE is a very good environment but it uses a lot of memory and processor power. Windowmaker less resource consuming, has a nice interface, but we couldn't make its sound server working. CDE is severely outdated. What else we can take into consideration? We don't need a very generic graphical environment 'cause most of our engineers came from Winblows environment. Thanks in advance. Alex

I really like Icewm. It is on the SuSE CDs. Very fast, very low resources, very stable, no extra frills like in KDE or GNOME. Of course, many people like the frills. Icewm is fully GNOME compliant but can run KDE apps as well, although the startup of KDE apps is slower than in KDE. I like icewm, is uses few resources, looks a bit like windows so your engineers will understand it, and it can look very cool :) You can use xfm with it to add folders and icons to the desktop, or icedock if you liked windowmaker applets. Saludos Gustavo

You might want to evaluate Xfce. Henry -- When I discovered Linux I also discovered that I didn't need Microsoft anymore. SuSE 8.0 Linux user # 95851

The sound server is only used for window manager events you don't really need it. However, I can help you get it working. What errors are you getting? Charles -- "sic transit discus mundi" (From the System Administrator's Guide, by Lars Wirzenius)

Try IceWM - I've just started using it in preference to KDE / Gnome, and the memory requirements are miniscule. Jon
You mentioned an engineering department right? What---are they running 486's with 8 MB RAM? Any decent dept these days at least has a PIII 1 GHz with 128 MB RAM.

We're running PIII 800MHz with 256MB RAM. The problem is that our eng. Linux workstations act as intranet servers and they also run tons of varies data analysis tools, and MySQL databases. These workstations are severely overloaded with all this stuff. So, we're looking into possibilities to take off some load by moving into less system resources hungry desktop environment.
