Simulation mode ignored.
Hi, I bought recently a dvd recorder, an LG GSA-4160B model (16X Super Multi DVD Rewriter, double layer, all DVD formats, it claims). Well, using xcdroast simulation mode the dvd is writen, not simulated. I don't know if it is a sofware problem, or hardware. I just report it here so that people can check it. I tried twice, to make sure I had made no mistake. Also xcdroast says that only DAO mode is supported. I had the same problem using K3B on SuSE 9.2. I had borrowed a DVD dual layer writer to burn a SuSE DVD for a backup copy. As the disc's cost $10 each I tried the simulation first and found that it had actually burnt the DVD instead. Since then I had forgotten about this problem until you mentioned it. Looks like a common problem with both K3b and xcdroast on both SuSE 9.1 & 9.2 -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

It will be too much coincidence if my windows freeware burner also doesn't support simulation mode in a DVD? Perhaps it is not a problem... it's a feature :-) See a screenshot (simulation mode = 'test write'): http://www.cdburnerxp.se/help/images/burn_data.png -- Marcos Lazarini

K3b and xcdroast are only frontends to growisofs and cdrecord. Chances are that either they do not pass the simulation option to the writing program, or the problem is with the writing program itself not honoring that option. When I go home, I may take a look what happens. I have never tried simulation mode, so I'm not sure. Cheers Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

Correct.
Chances are that either they do not pass the simulation option to the writing program, or the problem is with the writing program itself not honoring that option.
Acording to the log, the option is passed: Calling: /usr/X11R6/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/xcdrwrap CDRECORD dev= "ATA:1,0,0" gracetime=2 fs=16384k driveropts=burnfree -v -useinfo speed=4 -dao -dummy -eject -pad -data "/nuevo/dvd_data.iso" ... The option "-dummy" is present, it is passed to xcdrwrap at least; I don't know what it does. The interesting point is that several people report the same problem, so chances are that it is a software problem. I could try cdrecord directly, but I never did. Then we should report to feedback, I think.
When I go home, I may take a look what happens. I have never tried simulation mode, so I'm not sure.
