I'm about to buy a couple of new servers. It looks like they'll use Opterons, with which I have no experience. Am I likely to have any problems running applications? Are there good sites to learn about any practical issues there may be? Also, my supplier is suggesting using SLES9 rather than Pro. I've never had anything to do with SLES and don't understand what it buys me. Is there somewhere that explains the differences without giving pages of marketing fluff? Thanks, Dave

There shouldnt be any major issues if their acting as servers. The only issue we had with ours was when we were doing a network install of 9.1 we had to download a 64_bit boot cd from suse ftp site.

SLES provides you with a guranteed life (5 years) in regard to updates, upgrades and so on. Its also got numerous vendor approvals from Oracle and others and comes with support from suse, as opposed to the box sets which dont. Regards, Ben

Here is a single page of marketing Fluff... http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/preview/comparative.html Jerry

Hello Dave,
What kind of applications are going to be deployed on your new servers ?
Opteron is basically x86_64 arch which means all your existing 32bit
apps can work along with 64bit apps. you can even choose to install
32bit os on top of it . one of the problem that you might face with
x86_64 is that a library present in lib/ dir in 32bit may appear in
lib64/ folder in x86_64.
maybe you want to check out x86-64.org
SuSE Pro is basically a community release with all bleeding edge
packages. while SLES is more hardened for enterprise use to ensure
stability, security etc, most know bugs wud have been taken care of
etc .
so if you are looking at deploying on production servers for biz
critical apps and also need support you may want to consider SLES .
my 2 cents
harsh

I just assembled a new server using dual Opterons on an MSI mainboard with SATA RAID. Using 9.1 I had no trouble with the OS installation at all. It's not in service yet but I have AMD 64s, which is essentially the same chip, in other boxes running without problems. Except of course for that damn CD burner issue which shouldn't be an issue on a server. FWIW I was curious about the new Solaris release so earlier I installed the demo version of Solaris on this server. The Solaris installation GUI choked on this hardware (the board and chips were fine but it's very sensitive to video card choice) and I had to install from the command line. The only desktop choice I could find was a modified Gnome desktop (not my favorite, but still nice). Overall I have to say that the quality, flexability, and ease of use of the SuSE installer is still the best I've ever seen and you don't have to pay extra for all the various server packages. Jeff
