[SLE] By popular demand, KDE+XFCE...
Damn, I'm sorry. For everyone that mailed me requesting a copy of my magical startkde and .xinitrc files (there were ten or fifteen of you), I apologize for the delay. Below is the (edited) text of a message that Aduanne Carter sent to me back in may, concerning the use of KDE and WindowMaker. I've edited it to be XFCE, but it works for most window mangers. -=|JP|=- (Resident GNUbie) Jon Pennington | SuSE Linux 6.1 jon_pennington@excite.com | Kernel 2.2.7+ Kansas City, Missouri, USA | K6-2 350 I run KDE and XFCE here is how: Edit /opt/kde/bin/startkde so end of file looks like: # # now try to start the services # startifaudio kaudioserver startifaudio kwmsound tartifthere kfm -d startifthere kcontrol -init [ -z "$KDE_WM" ] && startifthere kbgndwm [ -z "$KDE_WM" ] && startifthere krootwm startifthere kpanel [ -z "$KDE_WM" ] && KDE_WM=kwm # # finally start kwm; finish when it's ended # exec $KDE_WM Then, edit $HOME/.xinitrc so the bottom looks like: KDE_WM=xfwm; export KDE_WM WINDOW_MANAGER=xfwm; export WINDOW_MANAGER exec $WINDOWMANAGER ________________________________________________________________ Get FREE voicemail, fax and email at http://voicemail.excite.com Talk online at http://voicechat.excite.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Here you go (I think):

Hi, Forgive me for my ignorance - I missed the last email. Is this script used for display KDE and XFCE at the same session or one at a time but switchable from one to another. The matter of facts, I had edited my /opt/kde/bin/startkde as well as .xinitrc. I don't get any effect - it still displaying as before, xfce. A month ago, I did posted a question whether it is posssible to add xfce into Window manager selection lists at the login screen. I wonder if this script is for? By the way is that a typo on the last line, $WINDOWMANAGER is should be $WINDOW_MANAGER? Well, after easily getting my sendmail configuration setup and running with SuSE 6.2, via the Manual and Yast, I decided to go for Postfix based on things I saw on this list. Well, via Yast, did the install of postfix. Via Yast, updated the postfix rc.config variables. Had to reboot anyway (went to dinner and came back). Postfix started up fine. But no matter what I did, could not send/recieve mail. *sigh*. I am not saying I couldn't have gotten there finally, just that it is SOOOOOO easy for sendmail under SuSE 6.2, and postfix isn't. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Make sure you have modified the default /etc/postfix/main.conf to suit you site. After that it runs almost out of the box. Its first time I heard someone say sendmail is easier than postfix :) Charles wrote:
