did you try "rebuilding your help data base" ???
After downloading new "help" rpms I often rebuild mine, even though I have the box: "automatically rebuild databases" checked
No, I don't think I've attempted to rebuild my help database. How would I do this? For that matter, where is the box "automatically rebuild databases"?
(text deleted) Answer: Go to "KDE/SuSE-control center" ( it's on "KDE-kicker" (gear) menu ) open (SuSE) "Control Center"; find "Help", click on it, and then click on "SuSE" A new screen should open, follow the instruction (i.e. enter "administrator (root) password", etc) after the bottom it should show a dialog box: "re-build data bases," do it and you SuSE help data base should get re-built (mine shows 19 American flags - in 4 general categories)
Are you running KDE desktop, and if so, do you have a "red and white life preserver" on your bottom "task bar" ?
Yes and yes. What happens when I click on it is as I described before. I get a list of links; some, such as that for Bash, are linked to actual help; others, such as that for "Application Manuals | KDE", go owhere....
That tells me your "help data base" is not complete. So re-build it as stated above.
Do you also have a KDE help icon ??? (test delted)
I did a little more research -- KDE's help is also a "life presever- that's why I changed mine to a "penguin" --- so they looked different. IIRC, KDE's help gets installed as part of "KDEbase3" and then installed when SuSE Help is rebuilt. Hope this helps. Ah, but it doesn't. First, I'm not sure what you mean: "Help" the tab, or (above this) "Help" the menu header? When I choose the "Help" tab, I read a Japanese text that translates as "There's no quick help for this control module. Click HERE to see the manual for the control center as a whole." I click, and there I am again with my old friend the SuSE HelpCenter As for "Help" the menu header, it too offers help. (I didn't bother to check if it delivers.) Yes, I forgot to mention that this system is Japanesified. (I didn't/don't want it to be Japanesified; all I want to be able to do is to enter Japanese as well as read it. I could do that perfectly well on my English-interface Win2k system [nostalgic sigh].) Hmm, that's interesting: under the index entry "Areas and access assistance | Nations and languages" (again I translate from the Japanese), I see NO "country" and NO "language". Common sense [ha ha] tells me that I should specify a country -- though as long as I use Universal Time, why should that matter? -- and a few languages . . . but "common sense" hasn't got me very far with Linux, so I'm reluctant to experiment. Moreover, I know that I do already have all the Help stuff that I need: I get it simply by typing "help:whatever" in Konqueror, a procedure that actually I rather prefer to dicking around in menu systems. So many thanks for your help, but I think that this issue is closed. (After waiting impatiently/politely for ten minutes or so, I'll no doubt post another question!)

Then, either is trying to show help in Japanese, that might not exist, or is trying to show it in NO language, that doesn't exist either. It should default to English, I think. Interesting problem... you need the English help files, but Japanese input.

No, it is much more than time. Man pages (and help files) will be in that language, decimal points and monetary symbols will be set... many things change.

"Common sense" depends on the culture, the environment... and the OS ;-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
