[opensuse] KDE in 11.1
Hi, Just installed SuSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1. KDE 4.1 will take some getting used to. A few questions: What is the "plasma dashboard"? I started it from icon at bottom of screen and all it did was put a tiny message up at the top of the screen saying "Plasma" and make everything else disappear. Clicking anywhere caused the "Plasma" message to go away and everything else to come back. Not sure what this is supposed to do. When I first logged in there was a strange semi transparent window showing with some normal desktop icons in it. I closed the window to see what would happen and now can't get it back. Where did it go and where did my desktop icons go? Every time I open a console window it alternates it shape from vertical rectangle to horizontal rectangle. How can I get it to only open as a vertical rectangle? The way things are going I will probably have more questions? http://userbase.kde.org/UserBase seems to be a bit broken at the moment: What is UserBase? UserBase is a collection of pages dedicated to helping users everywhere get the best experience when using KDE. Here you will find Image:dialog-ok32.png * Pages dedicated to applications - Explore features that you never knew existed! Image:white32.png * Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Image:white32.png * Tutorials and Guides - Getting things done, and solving problems Image:white32.png * Tips and Tricks - make your life easier and more pleasant There is no links except those for images. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Did you try to click on the "Home" link? After all, it's a wiki, so if it's broken, fix it. http://userbase.kde.org/Welcome_to_KDE_UserBase Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

:-D Good idea. Though it is not trivial. The problem is that http://userbase.kde.org/UserBase should be few times linked explanation, and it is not. The home page is better for that purpose. Maybe it would be the best to make it redirect to main page (Home) so that possible external links don't get broken.
I was there too. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, just skip it. Go to the 4.2.

http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma#General_Questions see: My widgets are hidden under the windows. How can I show them? This is where dashboard is used.

Right click on empty space on desktop, select Add Widgets. The one that you are looking for is Folder View. When added play a bit with right click and options for Folder View.

Is there a "SUSE approved" method for doing this? I want to avoid SUSE's update mechanism from losing track of what's installed and what patches may be available. Reminds me of the early days when there was constant churn in KDE versions with dozens of rpms to be installed over the top of older ones, seemed like nearly every week! Sometimes names changed and old ones had to be removed before new ones could be installed. As I remember I finally broke it beyond repair and had to reinstall from the CDs. And this was getting the updates off of SUSE's own web site! Bob -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm using KDE3. KDE4 is just a toy, because it changes to fast, with new features (and bugs) every time I update it. The 4.2 is really worth to install. The main page with instructions and 1-click links is: http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4 It is from openSUSE stand point development, so it contains some bugs. During installation using 1-click it may complain on dependency problems. Use Expert button in window with complaints and post it here. I just told YaST not to install packages like kde_sysinfo, compiz-kde<something> and I guess one more. That dependency issue seems to be because KDE4 pattern. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
