I bought a dual layer DVD writer that is a USB 2.0 device. I used it to burn some data DVDs using k3b on my Dell Inspiron 5100 (SuSe 9.3 Pro with "latest" updates via YOU). The last time I tried to burn some DVDs - I re-attached the burner but could not get the system to recognize it. There are two USB ports on the system - EHCI & UHCI. I swapped cables and even hubs. If I look at the USB devices using Configure (KDE Control Module), I see it is recognized as a USB 2.0 storage device but as a storage device not a CDROM/DVD burner. It is attached to a USB 2.0 controller. It worked but now it won't (yes it sounds as though it is "broke" - but why is it seen on the bus????). I don't have any systems in the house that I trust have USB 2.0 controllers - but I will try on a Useless-98 box I have (in fact I can try it with Kanotix/INSERT now that I think about it ....) Does anyone have any ideas as to how to figure what I may be doing wrong? or work to debug things here?? It is a Mad Dog Megastor burner if it matters/helps but is recognized as an Acer USB 2.0 storage device.... really reassuring! Rich

Try looking up "hotplugctl" and seeing what it can do for you. I'm not an expert with that, as Debian used a hotplug deamon. you may try restarting "coldplug" with "rccoldplug restart" but I'm not sure what affect that'll have on your system. Just a thought. -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16! -- See Ya' Howard Coles Jr. John 3:16!

Try: attach device to your hub, issue as root: rchotplug restart wait for the restart to finish and then try to access the device -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2

OK ... it is important to know what, if anything, solves a problem that is posted to the list. Someone on another list noticed with his USB DVD burner is that it is not recognized properly as a burner if he turns it on and there is already a disc in the tray. So the solution? Make sure there is NO disk in the burner when turning it on! It makes no difference is the disk is a blank... the drive is seen as a storage device & not a burner. If this happens, try taking the disc out, turning it off, and then on again after waiting a few seconds.
