Hello there Mike, Thanks for the comments which have helped me to rethink the whole question. On Mon, 05 Feb 2001, you wrote:
I don't understand what you mean by BootMagic not "seeing" a drive that is entirely formatted for Linux.
This is really what made me ask myself the same question and then I realized that what I meant was that it did not recognize the drive. Why? - I had forgotten this - PartitionMagic had reported error #108 on the drive. Now that they have come out with a new version 6.0 which is compatible with my Windows Millennium, I was able to get more info about this. Found that the reported error meant (1) MBR Partition table not in sequential order. (2) The partition for Caldera Linux had 'Partition not ending on cylinder boundary' , <End CHS> 376/127/62 instead of 376/127/63. (3)SWAPSPACE partition warning 'EPBR partition starting at sector 3346560 overlaps previous EPBR partition'. The Caldera partition was created in 'expert' mode from Caldera installation CDROM which probably messed things up. Conclusion - back to square one, complete reformat and repartition; or live with a small (30 Mb) DOS partition on the second drive - perhaps useful for storing data. Also the moral of the story seems to be 'don't partition one bit with Linux and the other bit with MS-DOS '.
I use BootMagic all the time to boot between Win and SuSE. I usually set up just 3 partitions (all primary partitions) for Linux:
/boot (10 - 15 MB) swap (varies, mine is 512 MB) / (rest of disk)
I install LILO to the /boot partition, tell BootMagic what disk/partition I want to boot Linux from, and away we go.......
Maybe I'm not understanding just what problem you're having....
