[opensuse] Vertical Quicklaunch on the Desktop in KDE4 - It's a Winner
Guys, The far right-hand sliver of the screen is rarely covered on my desktop. Using the quicklaunch widget turns it into a very useful launch area without placing an entire 'toolbar' on the edge by using the 'quicklaunch' widget. Using the quicklaunch, you can put ~20 of your favorite apps in a very convenient location without losing desktop real estate. See: (42k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/ss/kde4/vertical-quicklaunch.jpg Initially the quicklaunch widget orients itself in a horizontal configuration. Simply using the resize handle, you can resize it into a vertical configuration. Right after resize, the whole quicklaunch will look like a mess due to a bug that changes the size of the icons to 128px as the widget is resized vertically. Just click on the preferences access button and set the size back to 16 and you are good to go. (while you are there also increase the maximum number of visible apps to ~30 or so) To populate quicklaunch, just right-click the quicklaunch on the icon above where you want your app located and navigate to the .desktop file for the app you want to add and click OK. The .desktop files are usually located at: /usr/share/applications /opt/kde(3)/share/applications/kde (adjust as required) /usr/share/applications/kde4 To rearrange the application order, just drag the icons where you want them in the quicklaunch. Enjoy! (PS. the multiple konqueror and dolphin icons are the user & su versions) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Useful piece of information, I could completely remove the task bar. However, in the lower right side of the task bar I have Kmail icon, which I need to access often. Is there another way to access Kmail, so that to remove completely the task bar? -- Dr. Bogdan Cristea http://cristeab.googlepages.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Great idea, David! I've set up my bar s that it is NOT the full height of the screen. The controls are set so its CENTRED. Bogdan: Click on the 'peanut' to activate the controls, then 'more settings'. Next, choose 'centred'. Now those 'sliders' let you set the position and height of the toolbar. John Benett: I _could_ but don't set it to autohide etc. Click on the 'peanut' to activate the controls, then 'more settings'. You can then set 'auto hide' and/or 'windows can cover' -- "The creative person is willing to live with ambiguity. Bogdan, Interesting question. Sure, you can always add the kmail launcher by adding /usr/share/applications/kde4/kmail.desktop to quicklaunch, but what about the systray function?? If it exists as a .desktop file, I would think you should be able to add it to quicklaunch, but I don't know how it would update, etc.. I'm not saying it won't, I'm just saying I don't know. Poke around and see if you can find a .desktop file for it and give it a whirl. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. It doesn't seem to be possible to embed plasmoids in the quicklauncher, but you can always add a systray plasmoid to the desktop and place it next to the quicklauncher Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Great app, but..... Is it possible to get this to be on top of other windows, and/or to automatically hide? Thanks, John. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
