I didn't know about this package till today. I don't need it, but thought there may be some here who'd like to check this out! Thanks Tony, for the VariCad plug. Yep, I paid $450 for it (included upgrades), a few years back, and will do so again when the SuSE 8.2 version gets compiled. They have a really good upgrade policy, and the upgrades are substantial. VairCad is what allows me to do my engineering construction drawings on a Linux box. Note that the demo is a no-cost download. It works really well, especially if one does 3D mechanical stuff. Look at their disclaimer about architectural drawings: they are mostly talking about me and my 2D floor plans :-))
I had seen some really strong web page criticism of LinuxCad. I thought it couldn't possibly be so bad, and it only cost $99 or $100 to find out. I found out that I couldn't read English well enough to understand the manual OR the menues. Since I couldn't understand things, I can't really vouch for whether or not it does what it claims to do ... 8-; I called the folks in Chicago who sold it, but didn't get much farther. See http://www.zip.com.au/~erikd/lcad.html It is a newer version of what I ignored, and it references the original complaints. I went with VariCad after the Czechs joined the OpenDWG consortium and VariCad could manage .DWG files nicely. No, it's not open source, but it works. For true OPEN-SOURCE cad, see Varkon http://www.tech.oru.se/cad/varkon/ It is a parametric design package, needs some help before it can directly replace AutoCad, but has really great promise.
