rsync vs. rdiff-backup...what's the difference?
What's the difference between rsync and rdiff-backup? They seem to do the exact same thing. My goal is to: Backup changed, added or deleted files on my system from one drive (/dev/hda) to another (/dev/hdb). Actually, deleted files would be removed from my backup upon nightly backup runs. I won't be doing anything over a network. Tom -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems 805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com

Just read some info on rdiff-backup at http://rdiff-backup.stanford.edu/ - It looks like it has some features regarding restoring previously deleted/ changed versions of a file. Sounds cool! If you run a backup after having changed a file, change your mind and want the previous version instead, you can restore it! Haven't installed or tested yet, but that sounds like a feature worth having for me. Bernd -- "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. ~ after Mr. Arai's kind recommendation, I had a look :- . . . seems rdiff-backup has added charm that it can do incremental backups, and can keep old deleted stuff just as long as you like to specify ~ 2 days ~ 3 weeks ~ or whatever you fancy then, if you might wish . . . restore a file or directory to the state it was in, at a specific time, on a specific date. [ the team that designed it is prolly a quality offshoot of Andrew Tridgell's Samba folks ~ the Manual of "rdiff-backup" displays olympic gymnastic ability.] -- best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Almost right, an offshoot team from Samba is supporting a library (librsync). librsync has functionallity that would be needed by an rsync like program, but it is NOT used by rsync.
From what I have seen rdiff-backup is the end result of a single persons effort to make that library into a highly usable program. (Ben Escoto). I suspect rdiff-backup was related to Ben's doctoral thesis, but I don't know that for sure.
