Firefox & Thunderbird move from Windows to Linux
I want to keep my emails / bookmarks from my Windows set-up over to my Linux installation. How can I do that? Will my Thawte certificate still work? bye Ronald Wiplinger

It's all dependent on what programs you wish to migrate them from, Ronald. There are some mailbox formats that will near enough seemlessly migrate onto a Linux platform. For example, I was able to transfer all my mailboxes and folder formatting from Pegasus Mail (WinPmail) in Windows to Kmail in Linux. The bookmarks will be easy, they are simply in a html file. Put them onto disk (back them up to a CD which is a good idea anyway) and import them into whatever browser you want to use. If you can give us some more information I'm sure we can go into better detail. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. lol! I've often found that having information ONLY in the subject line, leads to its being missed. I think in this case, Kevanf1, you missed the subject line material. FireFox bookmarks are, as you said, easy ... just copy bookmark.htm over to the new setup and import. Thunderbird, I would guess, would be the same. But, I am not sure since I do not use it. Peter

Always struck me as odd that *no one* seems to "see" the subject , even tho it's usually in larger an bold type in Kmail... and that is the email program most of the folks use.. esp. the newer angels among us.. At least you can do it easily if they have everything open at full screen... "Okay, starting at the top of the screen, read me what it says.. " -- j Out here in the fields ; I work for my meals.. I think I have a good excuse this time. I'm dosed up on high dose prescription only painkillers (again) and in absolute agony. I have arthritis all through my body but particularly bad in my back. While repairing a friends PC last week it went on me....very badly. So I'm not exactly with it :-))) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. It's osteo. I was on Celebrex.... I'm sure you've heard about Vioxx which is it's cousin. I stopped taking it about 12 months ago when I first heard the stories coming from the States. Now I'm purely on Paracetamol/Codeine on prescription strength. It helps but does not take it away completely. Then there are the bad days :-((((( I'm 43 by the way. Still, life goes on :-) -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== PLEASE DON'T drink and drive it's not clever, it's just stupid. Thunderbird or Mozilla mail is easy; you could even use the same folder when you boot one or the other systems, if you let the windows side be boss, ie, store them in a fat partition. The trick is telling the linux side where the mail folders are - normally they are in a folder like "~/.thunderbird/dcvgs9m1.default/Mail/*", but there is a place where you can change that easily enough. As for the configuration itself, I'm not sure, but compare the directories from one and the other, and you will find which files you need to copy over, or symlink: in linux you can symlink one file to some other place. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFEVmGRtTMYHG2NR9URAp7kAJ40uui74XNhOuTlU+LB5B8bkj9UGQCeLEYK GRHKAIG9n74t+0y2aBjZsfE= =4xIH -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Hello, It is rather easy, I usually share my mailboxes between my windows installation and my linux installation. I have a FAT32 partition in which my mailboxes are located, you simply have to configure both installations in order to use the same folders and files. For your accounts and saved passwords, just copy : abook.mab ???.s default.ini prefs.js and training.dat (for spam definitions) from your Windows profile to your Linux profile I have a FAT32 partition in which my mailboxes are located, you simply have to configure both installations in order to use the same folders and files. And it works fine, no need to synchronize !! For Firefox, copy : ???.s bookmarks.html prefs.js from your Windows profile to your Linux profile. Good luck. Michel

I'm not sure what you mean by "keep my emails / bookmarks from my Windows set-up over to my Linux installation.", but I use (and wrote) PMRA to allow my bookmarks to follow me around, windows or linux, home, work, or laptop. It requires an ftp server. I keep meaning to add the stored password file but I've been busy lately. http://www.catherders.com/tiki-download_file.php?fileId=2 -- If you're not confused, you're not trying hard enough. -- Please note - Due to the intense volume of spam, we have installed site-wide spam filters at catherders.com.
