[opensuse]Configure Samba with no password using YaST
How do I configure samba on openSUSE(I'm running 11.0) without a password under YaST? I know how to go back in and edit the /etc/samba/samba.conf file manually, but I've never been able to get YaST to configure it properly. It always asks for a password when I try to connect, but no matter what password I setup it never works. I've always had to edit the file by hand to "fix" what YaST should have been able to do. One of the reason's I stick with openSUSE is YaST, but this is something that I have never been able to get to work properly. I figure I'm missing something simple, but I have no idea. Its because Samba users and passwords are kept SEPARATELY. You need to add samba users with smbpasswd -a unix_user_name command.
That's not what I am asking. I don't want ANY password for Samba. I can edit the samba.conf file to do this manually. Why doesn't YaST allow passwordless access to Samba shares? When I edit it manually, I can just do a "computers near me" under windows, and it sees the shares. I work on a lot of computers for customers, and it's easier for me to have an unprotected network share on my internal network(that's firewalled at the internet connection). I know I don't have to add users/passwords if I edit it manually. Why doesn't YaST support that? Especially since my smb shares are read only anyway? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Probably because whoever designed YaST samba module never had time to add options for different use cases. There is one and it will create default configuration that requires password. So, option is to put that as whish list on openSUSE wiki http://en.opensuse.org/Feature_Wishlist , or on http://bugzilla.novell.com as Enhancement request. First is unofficial and it doesn't put pressure to be solved, and second put that pressure and it can happen to be "solved" fast as "later" or something else. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, if you use kde4, it is simple. The kde-sambamodule is not implemented, and there you set accept guestlogins, without password. About KDE3 in 11, i don't know, kde3 used to have the kde-sambamodule, but i am not using kde3 anymore.. I suffer the same problem: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=372261 -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (Now or never...) Why do you need a kde program to setup samba? I just use YaST. Never heard of having to use something else to do it.

I don't use KDE4 much. It's just too different from v3.x. Too much eyecandy and too many things are missing.
Hmmm....well, there hasn't been any activity on that in over a month.... :-( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That is exactly what i think: overvaluation of kde, i think, thereby degrading, and crippling a working app (samba), and make it dependable from a Desktop environment... i never liked it, but i cann't do zilch about it.. ;)

Exactly... But you can take a look in kde3's config mngr, and look for samba. As root you will be able to solve your problem. -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (Now or never...) There's the manual edit. Fortunately, it's not that bad.
