mailutil program in openSUSE Leap 15.3
Hello: I've been using mailutil program to backup my imap mailboxex. It seems that openSUSE Leap 15.3 doesn't have this program. It is part of alpine package and it is there in Leap 15.1 alpine. But not in Leap 15.3 alpine package. I checked two alpine packages, the official OSS package, and alpine from repositories/server:/mail/ repo. None has mailutils. Does anyone know why, and if its remove was announced? Thanks, Istvan

Where exactly do you expect it to be? There are over 15 000 packages; I suppose you can subscribe to commit notifications. Tumbleweed has regular snapshot announcements which list detailed changelog for each package. Changes to the next release normally appear in Tumbleweed first so this is probably the best way to get "early warning".

QENada you mean. Your original comment made the strong inference that the packages are in the main repo, when they clearly are not. They are in the OBS, and you should have clearly stated that when you posted.

I said that opi and zypper found it (in my machine), and they did. The OP specifically said he was using the server:mail repo, same as I do. True, I did not initially check on which repo the package was on Leap, because by default those two programs do not say, and in tumbleweed it is in the oss repo. The OP was looking inside the alpine package, instead of checking for a mailutils package, which I found existed by grepping in ten thousand of mail messages. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Yes -- on /your/ machine; however, by not mentioning that you have that OBS repo installed, you left the clear impression that the packages are in the main 15.3 repo, which they are not.

Given that, in 15.1, mailutils was part of the alpine package, a perfectly reasonable place to start looking, is it not? Your solution to his problem consisted of showing him the packages he needs are in TW, then leaving him on his own to find them for the version he's using. Don't you think it would have been far more productive simply to give him the solution to his problem?

Again, I did not notice the package was not in the oss repo. I thought it was in the oss repo. Please notice that neither zypper nor opi say in what repo it was found by default. Do not mix mailutil program with mailtuils package/program. The mailutil program is part of alpine package, it has nothing to do with gnu mailutils. The changelog does mention it: - Drop /usr/bin/mailutil, it is not built by default anymore.

No, changelog indicates it was intentional. Then, I suggest you open a bugzilla against "alpine" package, requesting the program be included again. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

+ on that. I have noticed too, that Carlos has habit of describing whole process how he looked into his notes, then figured out that he has it in some other notes and describing whole process that he did to check for an answer… Then talking about slightly different topic, without actually answering the answer. Sometimes even confusing what the OP really is asking about. TBH I can see this behaviour in many of his posts. Please @Carlos do not take this as an offence, but try to be as factual as possible. It is not necessary (and it’s contraproductive) to describe how did you search for an answer in your notes, without actually answering the question. You are confusing users without actually answering them factually, I have seen this many times in your posts. Just try to be as brief and as factual as possible. It will remove much confusion. Cheers!

You are splitting hairs again. This program was removed because upstream decided to not build it anymore. This is a pretty good reason for a packager to drop it. I do not know what explanation you expect beyond that.

Well, that explanation can not be, as TW is building it in the oss repo, and Leap is building it on mail repo under another name. For some reason someone decided to split the package on two. I have checked upstream and there is no reference to mailutils back to september 2007 in their mail list. Only one note on 2016 that openSUSE had the mailutils program in a separate package for some reason long ago, then it was removed, something about uw-imap being outdated, then put back in the alpine package. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E.
