[opensuse] 10.3, Why is my CD ROM not showing?
Have changed now completely to 10.3 and was happy until I wanted to burn an copy of the Opensuse 10.3 life for a friend. K3B told me that there seems to be no carom drive installed. Looking further into the problem I also found that an inserted CD or DVD did not show up with the well known question what to do with the inserted medium. Looking into the hardware list of Yast I did not find any trace of a CD/DVD ROM. I know I have used the DVD to install 10.3 and I know that everything worked fine as I was burning my first copy of the life CD some week ago. Where did the CD vanished to? Could be that this phenomena was already discussed and I may have missed it. A google did not show up my problem but masses of USB problems etc.. Could somebody see me through my search for my CD ROM drive? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think you should give more informations as to your hardware. My CD/DVD does show, so that's not a general problem. IDE? SATA? drive brand? physical location? Thierry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, this is just a wild suggestion but: On my system, if there is no disk inside the dvd burner at boot the system throws a bunch of errors at the time of mounting drive (along the lines of "device failed to identify" "slow to respond" "forcing hardware reset") for a minute of two then just gives up. Then there is no dvd drive available. If however the system is booted with some disk inside it works just fine. So try starting system with a disk in the drive and see if that works? David, Tried that but without success. Even used the dvd with Suse 10.3 which came up nice with the installation menu. From there to the grub menu and still no sign of the cd/dvd rom. Modprobe and rchal restart give back a cdrom but I have not yet been able to make use of it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I know you've looked in YaST, but what is the output from /usr/sbin/hwinfo | grep cdrom Is it really blank? If so, does the CD/DVD drive work? It is possible that drive died, or maybe a cable has come loose. Do you have another bootable disk that you could try booting with or even another OS installed to test the drive with? -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That looks strange. Are you running the 2.6.22.12-0.1-default kernel (uname -r)? What happens if you run the same command as root? Did you try Kevin's suggestion? -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have to jump in here: I have had the same issues as the OP, but with mutliple versions of suse. My first version was 9.3, installed on an ASUS based clone notebook. Then SLED on the same notebook, then SLED on an HP nw8440 notebook ("SLED supported"), then SLED sp1 on the nw8440 In my it seems to be every other boot ... or sometimes I will go several boots in a row being able to access a cd, and then not. I may have to reboot a time or two or three before the cd icon appears on the desktop and I can access ANYTHING in the cd drive. What could cause that? And, across distributions and installs. The 9.3 to 10.00 was a wipe and clean install. As was the 10.0 to SLED. Then a clean install of SLED on the HP and then a clean install of SLED 10 sp1 (but preserving the /home partition). Below is the output of hwinfo as root and not. Also, I did the rchal resart as root, to no effect. I really do not know. cdrom.ko is a kernel module which (I assume) is needed to access the cdrom. It doesn't seem to be loaded in the OP's (and your) case otherwise why would hwinfo try to load the module (and subsequently fail when run as a sub-root user). The may be a bug about this already since it doesn't appear to be an isolated event. Maybe a search on the web for the error messages in hwinfo would lead to something further. Failing that, if/when the cd doesn't work again, I would suggest checking the loaded kernel modules to see if cdrom is still loaded. lsmod | grep cdrom If it doesn't show up, have a look at the boot log to see if any indication is given for why it wasn't loaded. Try loading the module as root modprobe cdrom and see if that helps. Actually, why not list the kernel modules loaded when everything *is* working and then again when the cdrom doesn't work. Maybe the differences will provide a hint. Failing all else, maybe add cdrom to the modules to be loaded on boot in YaST. I don't *think* this will hurt anything . <snip>

I'm not running 10.3, but I know that there must be some sort of bug in 10.2 (perhaps only exposed as a result of an update of some app) which means that the CD drive gets lost (ie my main machine does this, whereas my laptop, which has far less software and updates on it, is OK). Try running: rchal restart as root and see what happens. LOL - this just happened to me! Before beginning this post, I'd put a CD in to rip, and I was told there was no CDROM attached! I ran the above, and the rip works fine.
