I've just realized , after trying to connect a printer directly to the machine, that modules lp and parport do not load automatically. When I load them manually, and try to print a text file, the printer produces a single line that says "Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.2.13 Loaded 8436 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.2.13".

If I try lpq, I get "command not found".

Could someone please come up with some constructive advice? I have tried about everything, and am really at a loss.
