Why "Xntp" and not just "ntp" package name?
Was curious, anyone know why the ntp package is named xntp under SuSE? I know its been that way since the 7.x days, and now it's likely for the easy compatibility during upgrades, but how did it get the "x" in the first place? Just curious... tnx, Linda

Hiya! Google: what is the difference between xntp and ntp? 2nd result: http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp/ntpfaq/NTP-s-def.htm ----------------- Dennis Fergusson intended the "x" as "experimental". I got maybe twenty messages over the years suggesting the x was not appropriate for code in use over a decade and I dropped it for NTPv4. See the paper on NTP history at http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/papers.htm. In practice xntp refers to an implementation of version three or older while ntp refers to implementation of version four (or later). ----------------- -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Looking at the 4.1 change log, it goes back to 1998 and it was already at 4.0. Wonder if it would be of any utilty to change the RPM name in SuSE? When one does a "build-prep" on specs/xntp.spec, instead of being able to 'cd' to build/xntp<tab>, the build dir is entitled "build/ntp-stable-<version>" Hardly worth the bother, but might be a worth a "cleanup"....? It extracts the sources slightly atypically. It 'cd's -- it can't use the normal extraction method because it wants to change the build dir from something starting with "xntp->ntp. Seems like a __minor__ wart that could be removed in the build process...(?) Yeah, low priority "RFE", but I'd think it should be on a list somewhere. It still has an "obsoletes ntp3", and provides "ntp3". Seems like that's a remotely potential problem since it isn't exactly providing the real "ntp-v3", or do these things not make a difference? I tend to (to my bane), focus on details that others find "insignificant". Thanks for the *google* "clue stick" (so many unhelpful people say "get a clue", but then never say where to get one...sigh... :-) Linda
