[opensuse] Strange dependency problem during distribution upgrade
Dear list, I tried to update 10.1 to 10.2 using the download-iso. Yast was resolving the dependencies, and I followed the suggestions. Now, after two iterations of dependency display and resolving, the dependency-resolver-screen reappeared, but it was blank! No package displayed, no choice offered, just blank. I tried re-checking several times, to no avail. Tried various combinations of settings for the problematic packages that yast displayed in the main window, also with setting everything to be deleted - without success. Yast won't let me continue the upgrade process. It might have to do with the fact that I kept my system current with smart - including the guru and packman channels. Did anyone observe this behavior before? I was tempted using smart for a distribution upgrade, but hesitate since I can't afford sending this system to nirvana with a failed upgrade attempt. I grateful for any suggestions on how I can upgrade my system! If in yast, on the 10.1 install, have you selected the option to reset any conflicts that have been set to be ignored? If there are any, maybe the 10.2 yast in the install gets confused. Just something to try.

I use smart and yast together. While there must be a better way to get the resulting functionality, they are both rpm based. So dependency checking should work between them. I only wish that everyone could agree on version numbering/naming in rpms. I often wonder what method smart and yast use to determine which rpm is newer. Often yast suggest 'upgrading' to an older version, which, based on the insane version methods used by various packagers, is not sruprising. Perhaps you should rebuild your rpm database.

So, you get to the point
Thanks in advance,

Tried both, no change... except that Yast on the 10.2 install system crashed with a core dump once during resolving, but I wasn't able to reproduce it. I'm installing on a Thinkpad, and the reason why I want to update is mostly because of the better power management in 10.2's kernel.

I mentioned smart here because I wonder if there's something like smart dist-upgrade, like in apt. I only found spurious threads on distribution upgrading with smart in this list, which ended in discussion apt vs. smart. Has anyone actually done a system upgrade with smart?
