some newbie printer questions
Hope these aren't all RTFM questions... I just purchased an Epson Stylus C82 printer. SuSE nicely picked up that I had installed a printer and at some point I had to pick the printer type. The closest type to my model listed was the Epson Stylus C80. The print test went ok so I 'guess' I'm good to go. A couple questions though.. 1) Do I need to try to find C82 drivers? If so what do I need to do special after I install them. Will I see a choice then for C82 in YaST when setting up a printer? 2) I went to epson's site just to see what was out there for Linux and didn't seem to find much in the way of drivers. Do I need to go somewhere else for drivers? 3) While searching the web for related espon printer and linux stuff I ran across gimp-print. http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/index.php3 Is this something very worthwhile to install? Thanks for any help -- Rick

Hi Rick, Since you just bought it, it might be the newest model. So taking C80 instead of C82 might be a predecessor model, and if it does work, no problems. For special drivers go to http://www.linuxprinting.org where you can download the respective ppd files. If you get one for your printer, just put it in /etc/cups/ppd and it should be available (never tried this myself with 8.1, but that's the way it should work). You should then also be able to modify settings via YaST. This is (hopefully, see above) valid for 8.1 using cups (as it is by default); you did not specify which SuSE release you are running. Thanks. I'm still a bit confused by all of this. I went to the above and managed to get to this page http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-Stylus_C82 yet, it recommends the gimp-print driver. I go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=gimp-print and I can get what I guess is the gimp-print driver for C82 but then it mentions a bunch of other stuff that is confusing for a newbie: "This page provides data for the GhostScript ("stp") driver of the GIMP-Print 4.2.x series, if you are using the IJS driver of the GIMP-Print 4.2.x series, go to the "gimp-print-ijs" page, and if you are using GIMP-Print 4.0.x, go to the "stp" page." I have no idea what I'm using. I haven't installed any gimp-print that I'm aware of, other than just Gimp (which Patrick mentioned to me should have the latest gimp-print). But I'm still confused since all I know that I've selected was the C80 printer option under YaST when setting up my printer. Am I supposed to install gimp-print as well? and if so will that now show up as an option under YaST for my printer to select from? I must admit this is much more difficult than just popping in a windows CD that comes with my printer and following the prompts. I'll keep working to understand all this though. -- Rick

This should be /usr/share/model/Epson/ In 8.0 there is indeed a Stylus_C80-gimp-print.ppd.gz file already there. Theo -- Theo v. Werkhoven Registered Linux user# 99872 http://counter.li.org ICBM 52 13 27N , 4 29 45E. SuSE 8.0 x86 Kernel k_Athlon 2.4.19-4GB See headers for PGP/GPG info.
