[SLE] installing eth0 under SuSE6.3 evaluation version
I'm having trouble getting SuSE6.3 to install my pci ethernet controller. The card works fine under Windos and RedHat. It is found by the system. Under System Information it appears as: Bus 0 , device 8, function 0: Ethernet controller: Realtek 8029(rev 0) (this is correct model) Medium devsel IRQ 5 I/O at something indecipherable But not under ifconfig: ifconfig lo Link encap:Local Looback etc ie not eth0! have you tried installing the driver in yast - hardware - network card , then pick the driver and iobas and irq if needed. You can get this from windoiws by right clicking my computer and then selecting properties. When I try to install using ifconfig I get the error eth0 not found

Thanks for the replies I've gotten with this. I'm still stuck however. I tried using Yast to install the nic at eth0 using the ne2k-pci.0 module Do I have to do something to get setting changes made in Yast to update? I rebooted but ifconfig still reports no eth0 device. It seems to me that either the ne2k-pci.0 module doesn't work with my card (which is unlikely as it works fine under redhat) or it isn't compiled in the kernal? I've never compiled a kernal so I hope this not this. Have you tried to load the module manually? # insmod ne2k-pci Do not use an extension, ne2k-pci.0 does not exist. Take a look at the system log and see if the module loaded # tail /var/log/messages If it loaded OK, then you are ready to configure your network. Launch YaST. Select System administration->Integrate hardware into system->Configure networking device x Network type :eth0 : x x x x Networking device type [NE 2000 (PCI) ] x x x x x x Module options x x :io=0x240 irq=7 : x There are two options for NE cards in my official 6.3 distribution, pick the right one, I don't know how many you have in your eval distro. Add options if you need to or leave them blank if you don't know or aren't needed. Select Continue. This step changes the entry "eth0" at the top of your "/etc/modules.conf" file. You can verify it. Go to System administration->Network configuration->Network base configuration. Press F5 to add a device. Select "Ethernet". Select F6 and add IP address, Netmask, and Gateway IP. Select Continue. Don't forget to to ACTIVATE the interface with F4 before exiting the configuration panel. Press F10 to save and exit. Set up a Domain Name Server. Reboot your machine and see it get connected. To verify your network interface, as root, run: # ifconfig You should see an entry for "eth0". Verify the values. Check your routing to see something like this: # route or # route -n Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 123.456.789.0 * 255.255.252.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo default gw.domain.com 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 If it hangs at the first line, there is something wrong, check your wires, check the netmask IP, gateway IP, your Domain Name Server IP. Red Hat? Did I miss something in the original post? I believe this problem to be the same one I have and that is a bug in the installation process. thanks, this put me on the right track. After I'd added entry to modules.conf I was able to add the device in Yast and configure it there. An afternote: I have now got my hands on the full version and the problem was the same with it.
