I had my CD-rom and CD-rw working fine. I think a program I installed messed them up. Now, when I try to "mount" them, it says "mount: /dev/cdrecorder : unknown device" Same with the CD-rom But if I click on the desktop link it will open it up and I can see the files on the CD. Also, the cd-rom, when clicked on, opens the cd-rw even though it points to the cd-rom. I need to create a scsi-ide link to be able to use the CD-rw. That's why I'm going thru this trouble. Can you give us the output of `ls -l /dev/cdrom` and `ls -l /dev/cdrecorder`? Off the top of my head, it sounds as if your links are messed up. (Those devices should just be links to the real devices, such as /dev/hdc.) Also, your dmesg would help in figuring out where the cdrom and cdrecorder links should point to. Cheers, James
/dev/sr0 for the cd-rw /dev/sr1 for the cd-rom When I run "cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info" i get hdb for the cd-rw hdc for the cd-rom Not sure if that helps. I know the links are screwed up, but I can't figure out how to get them back to normal. I think this had something to do with VMware. ??? I tried it and hated it. Thanks for all the help!!!! OK - you could try making the links again. On my system, which sounds like yours, you should have (ignore line-wrap): root@oilslick:/dev > ls -al cdrom cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jan 19 11:14 cdrecorder -> /dev/scd1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jan 19 11:14 cdrom -> /dev/scd0 So, you can issue the following two commands, to create the "devices": root@oilslick:/dev > ln -s /dev/scd0 cdrom root@oilslick:/dev > ln -s /dev/scd1 cdrecorder Try that, and see if it helps. -Gord
Quick note: my permissions on scd0 and scd1 are rw-------- owner:tom group:root Problem?? Tom On Sunday 17 February 2002 03:34 pm, Gordon Pritchard wrote:

Tom: Since you're using the ide scsi emulation, you should be using the SCSI CD devices, ie - /dev/sr0, /dev/sr1, etc. On my IDE CD-R system: cjshaker@shaker-k7: ll /dev/cdrecorder lrwxrwxrwx 1 cjshaker trusted 8 Feb 10 03:40 /dev/cdrecorder -> /dev/sr1 cjshaker@shaker-k7: ll /dev/sr1 brw-rw---- 1 cjshaker trusted 11, 1 Sep 23 18:54 /dev/sr1 cjshaker@shaker-k7: ll /dev/cdrom lrwxrwxrwx 1 cjshaker trusted 8 Feb 10 03:40 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr0 cjshaker@shaker-k7: ll /dev/sr0 brw-rw---- 1 cjshaker trusted 11, 0 Sep 23 18:54 /dev/sr0 cjshaker@shaker-k7: Chris Shaker cjshaker@shaker-net.com Tom Nielsen wrote:
