Something to keep in mind... Nepomuk actually does provide a useful service - the indexing is not solely for search, but is also a part of the tools that provide meta data info in your file managers. You certainly do not need it to successfully use KDE4, but it is kind of handy. As well.. the CPU pegging thing is generally only happening on older KDE4 releases with older versions of Nepomuk/Strigi - for example I've got it running on my KDE4.8 setup, indexing my entire /home as well as some directories on an attached NAS drive, and it's un-noticeable 99.99999% of the time. In fact the only time it popped into my awareness was when I upgraded from KDE4.7.4 to KDE4.8.0. Immediately after the upgrade there was a short 2 minute period of furious re-indexing activity, and then it went back to sleep... and has been slient ever since.
