[opensuse] Software Updater
Hi All I really like SuSE and have used it since version 8 I used to buy the boxed versions but switched to OpenSuSE with version 10.1 I don't really want to join the 'moaning parade' but 10.1 is really starting to give me the hump to such an extent that M$ is welcome to it. My Software Updater has a mind of its own sometimes is fairly quick other times it takes hours I've got a reported update for compiz that won't bugger off it keeps crying that it cant find the required version of Metacity its now telling me I have 12 updates available (Including Compiz) after clicking "Update" and waiting 10 minutes I get this; "Transaction failed: Need media 1: Curl error for: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/update/10.1/rpm/i586/mono-data-1.1.13.8-2.10.i586.rpm: Error code: Timeout reached Error message: Callback aborted" (The OpenSuse DVD is in the drive by the way) Firefox is playing up I keep getting a message that its already running "How? I've only just logged in!!" Kontact intermitantley refuses to start and don't even get me started on USB drives I've given up reseting the permissions every time. Any chance of a promise that 10.2 will be really good? -- Regards Peter Cannon "There is every excuse for not knowing there is no excuse for not asking" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You shouldn't be using suse.com, you should be using one of the mirrors. This has always been true, the updates would be unusably slow and prone to failure and timeout in older versions as well if you use ftp.suse.com I'm guessing you set up the update source yourself. So if I were you I'd delete it and let the update config do its job and find a suitable mirror for you

well, the session handler will start up processes that were running when you last logged out. Alternatively, if it really isn't running, then you had a crash with firefox, so the lock file remains find .mozilla/ -name lock -exec rm {} \; -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I wouldn't exactly say I was a novice if I remember right I set that up when all the initial problems occurred and it was in someones mail or on the wiki one of the two. Are you saying just delete it from the sources in Yast and have nothing?

But its set not to save the last session.

Hmm will look for it. -- Regards Peter Cannon "There is every excuse for not knowing there is no excuse for not asking" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Then this shouldn't be new to you. ftp.suse.com has always been a no-no. The advice has always been to use a mirror

No, I'm saying delete it from the sources in YaST, and then run the online update config to get a new update source, you will then get one of the mirrors. ftp.suse.com should never ever be used. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Its been a long day and you've rightly chastised me, I'll get me coat :-) -- Regards Peter Cannon "There is every excuse for not knowing there is no excuse for not asking" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
