I am trying to get a ide CDRW, set up as a scsi drive, accessible to non-root user (with K3b). Unfortunately only root seems to have access to the drive. I tried to do a cdrecord -scanbus as user but it showed an error message. I added +rw to /dev/sr0, but nothing changed... I'm a bit lost, could someone give me some hints there ? Thanks Chris
On Fri, 18 Apr 2003, Christian just had to get this off his chest:
I am trying to get a ide CDRW, set up as a scsi drive, accessible to non-root user (with K3b).
Unfortunately only root seems to have access to the drive.
I tried to do a cdrecord -scanbus as user but it showed an error message.

Because that gets overridden by mount with other values.
I'm a bit lost, could someone give me some hints there ?
Have a look in man mount, in the iso9660 section. Try to change the uid=, gid=, and mode= values in the option field in fstab. E.g. /dev/sr0 /media/cdrec iso9660 uid=500,gid=100,mode=0660 Theo -- Theo v. Werkhoven Registered Linux user# 99872 http://counter.li.org ICBM 52 13 27N , 4 29 45E. You will need to change the permissions on the cdrecord program. It will need to have the SUID set on it. But this may pose a security risk. Try this as root and then run the cdrecord command again. chmod u+s /usr/bin/cdrecord -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, We just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Read "/usr/share/doc/packages/xcdroast/README.nonroot". Even if you are not using xcdroast, it applies. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
