Did run Alsaconf. No effect. I also noticed that I cannot use the volume control of MPlayer itself (returns always back to zero) but I can adapt the sound volume via my speakers or via the normal gnome volume applet. Does not seem to be a problem - playing DVDs goes fine but I get a continous stream of error messages:

ALSA lib control.c:654:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL alsa-control: mixer attach error: No such file or directory

Probably something with /dev/mixer.

Try to run alsaconf.
